Maudine Weems

WEEMS, Mother Maudine - passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Grand Blanc Rehab Nursing Center. Family hour 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church, 2120 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Isaac Golson officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery, G-3415 E. Hill Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11 a.m. Saturday. Mother Weems will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Friday. God blessed Robert and Rosa Stephens on June 15th in Birmingham, Alabama with their first daughter, Maudine. She was the oldest child born to that union, followed by Bobbie, Robert Jr., Curtis, Betty, Grover, Rosetta and Camilla. Mother Weems confessed her love for Christ at the early age of 13 years old in Birmingham, Alabama where she was baptized by Rev. Henry Robinson. She graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama. The family moved to Flint, MI in the early 1950’s. Maudine married her high school sweatheart, the late Lawrence M. Weems and to this union brought five children, Thomas, Latrelle, Shelia, Latona and Manya. Mother Weems was a faithful and active member of Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. H. Robinson. For 30 years she served as Church Secretary until her health prevented her regular attendance. She also served as Youth Director, Sunday School Teacher, Willing Workers Committee and a faithful Senior Choir member. She was a writer for the Flint Enquirer in the late 70’s; she also was the Public Relations Secretary to the late Moderator, Dr. A. J. Pointer for the Great Lake Baptist District Association. Mother Weems believed in excellence and in doing whatever task God called her to do. She had a stylish finesse with floral arrangements. Mother Weems also enjoyed singing, playing the piano and violin. She loved the finer things in life and had a great flair for fashion. Mother Weems unselfishly gave of herself to others. She was affectionately called “Granny” by many. Family and friends would regularly gather at the house for her cooking and we all loved being around her; some would even move in and they were welcomed with open arms. Mother Weems was employed by A.C. Spark Plug and the Urban Community Youth Outreach (U.C.Y.O.). Mother Maudine Weem leaves to cherish her memory: 3 lovely daughters: Shelia Weems of Lithonia, GA, Latona (John) Smith of Flint and Manya (Joe) Triplett of Grand Blanc, MI; son, Thomas (Denise) Weems of Detroit, MI; 12 beautiful grandchildren, Taqualia R. Weems (whom she raised since age 6), Shinita Horton of Atlanta, GA, Shekilia Weems of Lithonia, GA, Tameceo Weems, Thomas of Tucson, AZ, Jamal Mitchell of Gilbert, AZ, Tiffani Weems of Detroit, MI, Michael (Andrea) Mitchell of Phoenix, AZ, Majoya Triplett, Tatyana Scott, Joe Triplett Jr. and Jamaya Weems; 8 great-grandchildren; great-great-granddaughter of Lithonia, GA; sisters, Bobbie Hairston, Betty (Johnny) Smith, Rosetta Logan of Las Vegas, NV, Camilla Smith of Newport News, VA; brother, Grover Stephens; special sister-in-law, Mary Weems of Detroit, MI and Annie Laura Thomas of Birmingham, AL; numerous nieces; nephews and cousins including special cousins, Johnny (Lucy) Quinney and Annette Webb (affectionately called Aunt Ann); close family friends, the Bryson, Hamlett and Petty families; Rosetta Haywood, her special friend she called sister, Vivian Petty-Dunlap and special adopted granddaughter, Carisa (Melvin) Bishop. Mother Weems was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence M. Weems; daughter, Latrelle Denise Weems; parents, Robert and Rosa Stephens; brothers, Robert Jr. and Curtis Stephens; niece, Sheena Smith; nephew, Harold May; brother-in-law, Allan “Jack” Hairston; sons-in-law, Ray Brown and Dimiko Gaither; cousins, George Stephens, Sam Houston, Anthony Quinney and Bertha Carmichael and special friend (sister), Ella Mae Pippins.
