STEWART, Mrs. Mary L. - Age 89, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 10:00 Friday, May 10, 2019 at New Heaven Missionary Baptist Church, G-3184 Pierson Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Joseph Jenkins, officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:00 AM Friday. Mrs. Stewart will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-8:00 PM Thursday. Mary Louise Stewart was born March 20th, 1930, the 7th child of the late Alex and Fannie Mae Williams in Meridian, Mississippi. She met and married the late Cleave Pringle, Sr. and relocated to Flint, MI in 1947. She was a graduate of Northern High School in Flint. She attended Mott Community College. Mary began work for the City of Flint at Hurley Medical Center in 1959. In 1967, she was promoted to the Treasurer’s office and remained there until her retirement in 1989. She worked for the Flint Township Board of Elections during each election period for over 10 years. At an early age, Mary was baptized at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Meridian, Mississippi. After relocating to Flint, she joined the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and sang in the choir. In 1976, she joined the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She served in the Voices of Calvary and Nurses Guild. Later she joined the New Heaven Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until her passing. Mary was an active member of the community. She served on the Thursday Afternoon Club (An Affiliate of The Michigan State Association of Colored Women’s Club), where she served in several roles to include President. She was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She also volunteered in the bookstore of the Flint Public Library for 2 years. Mary was an avid bowler and golfer. She bowled in various leagues across the Flint region and served as an officer in several of those leagues. She was a member of both the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and the Women International Bowling Congress (WIBC). Mary participated in several bowling tournaments across the country. She served as a treasurer of the 24 Karat Golf League at Kearsley Lake Municipal Golf Course. Mary was an avid basketball and baseball fan. She loved the Detroit Pistons, Tigers, and the Michigan State Spartans. In 1978, Mary married Rem Arvill Stewart. They remained united for 32 years until his death in 2010. Mary Louise Stewart leaves to cherish her memory: 4 sons, Aaron (Pamela) Pringle Sr. and Kevin Pringle, both of Detroit, MI, Dennis Pringle, Sr. of Houston, TX and LaJuan Pringle of Charlotte, NC; several step-children; sister, Fannie Bellamy; son-in-law, Robert Meekins, 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and host of nieces and nephews to include special niece, Renee (Donald) McKenzie. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Rem; her parents; and daughter, Carolyn Meekins; 6 sisters, Lillian Williams, Lula Lee, Clara Williams, Rosalie Jones, Carrie Stewart, & Ruby Hickman; 4 brothers, James Edward Williams, Jimmy Lee Williams, Johnnie Williams, and Walter Williams. The family would like to express a special thanks to the New Heaven Baptist Church, Pastor Jenkins, First Lady Twinet Jenkins, and Mother Eunice Ingram for their overwhelming support. Mom was grateful to find a church home with New Heaven, as this church family brought her so much joy during her final years. And thank you to McLaren Hospital, especially the 8th floor staff.
