Mrs. Mary Katherine Smylor

SMYLOR, Mrs. Mary Katherine - Age 95, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the Landings of Genesee Valley. Family hour 11:00 AM Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Family Worship Center Church International, 3280 N. Linden Rd., with memorial service commencing at 12:00 PM Pastor James Hodo officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 11:00 AM Saturday. There will be no public viewing. Mrs. Mary “Mae” Katherine Smylor was born February 16, 1923 in Flint, Michigan the daughter of Arch O’Neal and Era Imogene Bibbs. She graduated from Flint Central High School, “Class of 1941”. Mary “Mae” was a striking beauty and in 1942 won the Sportsman Beauty Contest. She had many talents including tennis, piano, and crochet. She was a Beautician, Certified Nail Technician, Seamstress, artist and at the age of 91learned to play the guitar. Mary had various jobs throughout the years, including A.C. Spark Plug, a division of General Motors Corporation, Smith Bridgeman, Hudson’s and later she retired from Sears at the age of 81 after 22 years of dedicated service. She was married to Carroll Gwynn Smylor for 55 years, was a great mother to 3 children and was affectionately known as “Nana” to her grandchildren, as well as many others. “Nana” enjoyed cooking, entertaining guests and meeting new people. She was a Social Butterfly and was also known for her love of butterflies. Her signature saying was “Lady on the Run”. Mrs. Mary “Mae” Katherine Smylor leaves to cherish her memory: 2 daughters, Anita Smylor of Flint and Adrienne Smylor of Indianapolis, IN; son, Anthony (Jennifer) Smylor of Mt. Morris, MI; granddaughters, Tesia Smylor of Canton, MI and Monica (Jermaine) Moton of Romulus, MI; grandsons, Robert Boaz of Kennesaw, GA and Carlos Boaz of Flint; great grandchildren, Alondra Williams-Smylor, Tony O. Smylor Jr., Quynn and Lyriq Shumpert and Robert Boaz Jr.; nieces, Joann Courts, Corene Sturghill, Beverly (Marshall) Tolbert and Michelle Bibbs; nephews, Johnnie Dye and Hezekiah (Margaret) Bibbs Jr.; cousins, Winona Hinton and Josephine Haney; special cousin, Edythe Washington; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Mary Wallace, Helen Edwards, Ida Cartain, Mary Turner, Helen Hobson; friends of Rosehaven Manor and friends of Landings of Genesee Valley. Mary Katherine was preceded in death by: her husband of 55 years, Carroll Gwynn Smylor; parents, Era Imogene Bibbs and Arch O’Neal Bibbs; sister, Era Imogene Bibbs; brothers, Hezekiah S. Bibbs and Arch O’Neal Bibbs Jr.; and grandson, Tony O’Neal Smylor.
