COLEMAN, Mrs. Mary (Shumpert) - Age 63, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2006 at McLaren Regional Medical Center.Family hour 10:30AM Thursday, September 21, 2006 at North Central Church of Christ, 2001 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Min. Darron Fantroy, officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30AM Thursday. Mrs. Coleman will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1PM-8PM Wednesday. Mary Alice (Rhodes) Shumpert-Coleman was born April 28, 1943 in Lebannon, Tennessee, the daughter of Hershal Rhodes and Bessie Steele. Mrs. Shumpert-Coleman was a member of North Central Church of Christ. She was employed at General Motors (Buick) for the past 35 years where she served as Benefit Plan Representative. She was a member of the Unity for Justice Caucus at Local #599, the UAW Area-wide Women's Coalition the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW). Mary was the recipient of the UAW Walter Reuther Award for 20 years of continuous service to the membership of Local #599. She was currently serving on the Board of Directors at Security Federal Credit Union. During her career as a member of UAW Local #599, Mary also served on the Women's, Union Label and Civil Rights Committees. Mrs. Mary Shumpert-Coleman leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Clinton Coleman of Flint; daughter, Ava R. Quire of Flint; 2 sons, Robert H. Shumpert, Sr. of Flint and Johnny L. Shumpert III of Russellville, AR; 2 step-children, Fred (Romeeki) Coleman and Swala Coleman both of Flint; 5 grandchildren, Alexis Quire and Johnny Shumpert IV both of Flint, Alicia Shumpert, Robert Shumpert, Jr. and Britney Green, all of Russellville, AR; great-grandaughter, Angelica Nelson Quire of Flint; mother, Bessie Steele of Cleveland, OH; 2 sisters, Patricia Gibson of Flint and Ophelia "Libby" Slaughter of Cleveland, OH; brother, Charles Steele, Jr., of Cleveland, OH; 3 aunts, Williemae Naiper, Martha Tapo, Nancey Rheaves, all of Flint; goddaughter, Secmarica Turner; a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins many other relatives and friends including special friends, Barbara, Harriet, Joyce, Emma and Odessia. Mrs. Mary Alice (Rhodes) Coleman-Shumpert was preceded in death by her stepfather, Charles Steele; grandmother, Mary E. Harper; uncle, Emmett Harper. The family would like to express special thanks to McLaren Regional Medical Center CCU staff 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift, Dr. William Forten, Nurses Tara, Vickie and Jamie of ER, UAW Local #599 members, Unity for Justice Caucus, Security Federal Credit Union and many friends and family.
