JOHNSON, Mrs. Mary L. - Age 96, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020 at Heartland Health Care-Fosterian, Flushing, MI. Family hour 10:30 AM Friday, November 6, 2020 at Canaan Baptist Church, 910 E. Gillespie Street, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Charles E. Roots, officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd., Burton, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:30 AM Friday. Mrs. Johnson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM Thursday. Mrs. Mary Louise Johnson was born July 5, 1924 in Madison, Tennessee the daughter of Effie Hunter and John Johnson. Mary received her wings Friday October 30, 2020. She was the last born of 3 siblings. Mary moved to Flint, Michigan in the 1950’s. She was most known for the work she did as a Security Aide at Flint Southwestern High School. Mary was an Eastern Star and a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. She served with the Great Lakes District Ushers. Mary served as an Usher for over 50 years and was head of the Usher Board at Canaan Baptist Church also. During her service, Mary collected thousands of dollars in donations for the Annual Ushers Day programs throughout the years. She was a proud member of the Extraordinary Red Hatters group for over 5 years. Mary married Henry Pitts in 1942 and from that union, Grover Lee Pitts was born. They were divorced in 1945. In 1954, she married Ananias Johnson. They were married for 38 years until Ananias passed away in 1992. Mary remained a faithful servant with her physical presence at Canaan until she became ill. But, thanks to her loving Canaan Family she was able to serve the lord from the comforts of her home. As a family we know Mary was greeted at the Gates of Heaven by her late husband, son and brothers, “Fly High Mary” Mrs. Mary Louise Johnson leaves to cherish her memory: daughter-in-law, Marilyn Pitts; grandchildren, Stephanie (Albert) Williams of San Diego, CA, Patrice Pitts (Cleophus Mooney), Bryan (Veronica) Pitts and Tiffany Forbes, all of Flint; great grandchildren, Latoya Bolden, Nikita Pitts, Miesha Pitts and Christio´n Pitts; nephew, U.L. Brown; cousin, Charles (Sheridan) Williams of Detroit, MI; a host of other relatives and friends, including special friends, Emma Hill, Floris Dukes and Walter (Lucy) Tipton, all of Flint. Mary was preceded in death by: husband, Ananias Johnson; son, Grover Pitts; adopted son, Joe Brown; brothers, Otto Brown and Albert Broomfield. The family would like to express special thanks to Heartland Fostorian Staff, Medstar Ambulance Crew and the 12th floor Nursing Staff at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
