CHAPMAN, Mrs. Mary Helen - Age 82, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020 at Hurley Medical Center. Private funeral service will be held. Mrs. Chapman will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Tuesday. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Mary Helen Wash Chapman made her transition at 6:15 a.m. Monday July 6, 2020 at Hurley Medical Center, Flint, Michigan. Mary Helen was born December 26, 1937 in Newton, Mississippi, the daughter of Ferry and Florence Graham Wash. She joined the St. Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the Leadership of Rev. J.R. Smith at an early age. Mary married the Love of her life, Willie “MeMe” Chapman in August of 1957 and moved to Flint, Michigan. She began working in the Beecher School System, The Pink Garden and later she went to work at Flint Metal Fabricating, a division of General Motors Corporation, retiring after 36 yrs. Mary and Willie decided to be business owners in 1972 opening the Blue Note Record Shop on Saginaw Street which was a great success. Providing Gospel, Soul and Blues Music to the community. Mary was a person that believed in helping and providing for Everyone. She believed in Family Gatherings and Assured that Everyone had a great time. Mary was the last of 10 siblings. A Strong Woman She Was. Never met a Stranger she was a People Person. Whatever she thought she would let you know whether you like it or not. She never held her tongue, Anything goes. She Kept It Real!! Working and Making Money was her Thang. Mother was known as the “Food Bank Queen”. Mary Helen Wash Chapman leaves to cherish in her memory and will be missed by her friends and family: 2 devoted daughters, Margaret Moore (Robert) of Newton, Mississippi and Marjorie Chapman of Mt. Morris, Michigan; 2 sons, Willie Chapman Jr. (Georgette) Flushing, Michigan and Freddie Chapman (Lois) Mt Morris Township, Michigan; step-daughter, Cheryl Martin, of Flint; 8 grandchildren, Roderick, Shawntae, Derrian, Shavontae, Demondre, Marisha, Ramone and Marquise; 3 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, Keondre', Kiandrya, Ra'jah, Brandon, Radeja, Alanza, Ramaria, Shawna, Desmond, Damion, Kezzerian, De'Savion, Savanna, Mia, Gabriel, Bryson, Catlin and Aubrey;1 great-great-grandchild, Kerrigan; 8 sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her spouse, Willie Chapman; 3 granddaughters, Trina Chapman, Marquitta Moore, and Marshay Chapman; grandson, Ray Payne; parents, Ferry & Florence Wash; 5 sisters, Francis Baliff. Annie Norman, Rosie Evan's, Odis Hood, & Pernell Sanders; 4 brothers, Graham Wash, Dimmon Wash, Steve Wash and Benjamin Wash.
