Marietta Gaines

GAINES, Mrs. Marietta - Age 90, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at her residence under Heartland Hospice. Family hour 12:30PM Friday, November 25, 2005 at New Beginnings Ministries, G-5227 Beecher Rd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 1PM. Pastor Leon Watkins, officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12:30PM Friday. Mrs. Gaines will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10AM-4PM Thursday. Mrs. Marietta Gaines was born on July 18, 1915 in West Point, Mississippi. She was the seventh of nine children born to Rev. Ezekiel and Marietta (Davis) Hughes. Marietta confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She received her elementary and high school education in the West Point and Columbus, MS school districts. Mrs. Gaines relocated to Cincinnati, OH where she met and was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Gaines on July 28, 1941. To this union were born two children. Together they relocated to Flint, MI where they united with the Macedonia Baptist Church Family, under the Pastorage of the late Rev. Ira Watkins and the late Rev. J.C. Curry. During World War II, Marietta was briefly employed by AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors Corporation. Shortly thereafter, she obtained her cosmetology license from Dorthro School of Cosmetology in Detroit, MI. Mrs. Marietta Gaines leaves to cherish her memory: 2 daughters, Angelean (Eddie) Smith, Illeana Gaines, both of Flint; 4 granddaughters, JaSonica (Stacy) Crawford of Augusta, GA, Mishari, Shicara and Linnea Smith, all of Flint; 2 great-granddaughters, Malicia Smith and Cambriah Foster; great-grandson, Orin Foster, Jr.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Bessie Gaines of Flint; brother-in-law, Frank Gaines of Hollandale, MS; special cousin, Mrs. Ozella Jacskon of Chicago, IL; special friends, Mrs. Phoebe Rutland, Mrs. Anna Laura Mays, Rev. & Mrs. Milton Henderson, all of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Marietta Gaines was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Willie Gaines; parents, Rev. Ezekiel and Marietta Hughes; 8 sisters and brothers, Willie Lucinda, Daniel, Marie Lucinda, Clarissa Armenthia, Margie Loventres, Chester Arthur Grover Cleveland, Johnny Sidney, and Jimmie Doris. The family would like to express special thanks to the Heartland Hospice, Dr. Brice Tompkins, Roseanna, Christine Berry, caregivers Tawanna Young, Ms. Gina Lee and the many families and friends that supported us during our time of bereavement.
