ATKINS-NELSON, Mrs. Lula Pearl - Age 76, passed away Friday, January 15, 2016 at Vibra Hospital of Southeastern - Lincoln Park, MI. Family hour 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2016 at First Union Baptist Church, 7004 Fleming Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Archie Powell, Jr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11:00 a.m. Friday, Mrs. Nelson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. to receive friends. Mrs. Lula Pearl Atkins-Nelson was born April 23, 1939 in Newton, Mississippi, the daughter of Tabmadge and Mattie (Morrow) Williamson. She came to Flint, Michigan in 1961 and was a member of First Union Baptist Church for over 40 years. She loved to sing and sang in the choir of First Union Baptist Church and with the City Wide Choir until her illness. Lula graduated from Flint Central High School. She had affiliations with the Elks Genesee Temple #550 I.B.P.O. as Past Grand Daughter Ruler in the International Masons Order of Eastern Stars, Vice Daughter Ruler, Assistant Daughter Ruler, Social Chairman, Treasurer, the Chairman of Trustee Board of Western Michigan, Past Daughter Ruler the highest degree of Elkdom. Marion Anderson Chapter #4. Lula even had her own Chapter Lula-Atkins #241. She was the Worthy Matron of Lavina Hartfield, Grand Heroines of Jericho for the State of Michigan. Lula was an excellent cook at numerous restaurants in Flint. She was an advocate and had a love for children. Lula was a Foster Parent of Genesee County Department of Social Services for 24 years, having cared for more than 200 children. Lula enjoyed traveling, shopping, singing and Bingo. She showed much love for her family and was a very outspoken, caring, giving and loving person. Lula also loved to go out and eat. Mrs. Lula Pearl Atkins-Nelson leaves to cherish her memory: 3 daughters, Faye Chapman of Flint, Makita Nelson of Pontiac, MI and LaFrancis Burns; 2 sons, Thermon Atkins, both of Flint and Chaka Bloodsaw of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Antwan Atkins, Tabmadge Atkins, both of Flint, Makyla Southall, Ravon Thomas, both of Pontiac, MI, Edmond Curlin, Sheen Curlin, both of Flint, Eddie Curlin of Kalamazoo, MI, Dequan Chapman, Shemiya Chapman and Jamal Chapman; 3 sisters, May Jewel Chapman, all of Flint, Mary (Lawrence) Jordan of Jackson, MS and Gracie Evans of Flint; brother, Roy (Kelelether) Beal of Chicago, IL; a host of nieces including special nieces, LaToya Thames, LaShon Gibson, Deborah Marshall, Helen Chapman, Margaret Campbell, Shonteara Greene, Tashiana Chapman, Sade Chapman, Rona Harris and Tajuana Chapman; a host of nephews including special nephews, John Chapman, Sherdon Johnson, Troy Campbell, Fredrick Marshall, Michael Coleman, Dionte Chapman, Lamont Chapman, all of Flint and Damarius Chapman of Dallas, TX; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends including special friends, Ozie Brown, Queenie Van Pelt, both of Flint, Rose Long of Phoenix, AZ and special daughters, Julia Washington, Sharon Brown and Charlotte Randolph. Mrs. Atkins-Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Nelson; parents, Tabmadge and Mattie Williamson; sisters, Marie Nichols, Essie Mae Ross, Minnie Eva Hobson, Joyce Helen Williams, Julia M. Guise and Beulah Williamson; brothers, Odell and Woodrow Williamson.
