CURRY, Ms. Lou Ella - Age 73, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2024, at her residence. A Memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, May 9, 2024, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home 4:00 PM Thursday. There will not be a public viewing. CURRY, MSW, Ms. Lou Ella -of Flushing, Michigan answered the call of God on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at her residence. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, May 9, 2024, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. Lou Ella, who was lovingly known by her family as “NuNu” was born January 20, 1951 in Flint Michigan the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. J.C. Curry and Martha Ann Grace-Curry. She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a lifelong member until her death. Lou Ella was a 1969 graduate of Flint Central High School. She was a Western Michigan University Alumnus. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the university. Western Michigan is also where she pledged Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She was a 50+ year member of the sorority which she loved. She was a highly regarded social worker in the greater Flint community. Throughout her professional career she received numerous awards and accolades for her work in the social workspace. She was a lifelong learner, earning many certifications throughout her career. She was a glass ceiling breaker, and a trailblazer. In 1976, she became the first African American female director of the Department of Medical Social Work at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Through this appointment she guided and opened doors for many who were pursuing careers in social work. She remained a faithful and dedicated leader of the department for 15 years until illness led her into early retirement. Lou Ella lived with a few health challenges during her lifetime, but even in the face of these circumstances she will be remembered as one whose light was never dimmed. Through it all she remained resolute in her faith. She was intelligent, always put-together and determined. Lou Ella lived an inspired life to the end and was always hopeful. She was one of God’s favorites. Her greatest joy was her family whom she loved. And she was loved by her family. Her life was a gift and a constant reminder of the power of God. Lou Ella leaves to cherish her memory: her dedicated and supportive brother Josiah (Lawrencene) Curry; nieces Dawn (Rodney) Jones, of Flint, MI; Ulanda (Kirk) Brock, of Murfreesboro, TN; LaKisa (Tim) Bush, Clinton Township; Montoya (Dondrell) Smith, of Mount Morris, MI; Keyshanna Haney, of Daytona Beach, Florida; nephews Addae (Kimberly) Olamina, of Flint, MI; Todd (Romeki) Jackson, of Flint, MI; great nieces Courtni Jones, of Fortworth, TX; Alohni Gray, of Atlanta, GA; Madison Jackson, of Romulus, great nephews Christian Jones, of Chicago, IL; Josiah Curry Fulgham, of Marion, IN; Ahmir Gray, of Murfreesboro, TN; Todd Jackson, II, of Romulus, MI; Jaden Beasley Curry, of Mount Morris, MI; brother-in-law Glen Jackson, of Flushing, MI; goddaughter Tene Jackson, of Toledo, Ohio; a host of cousins and special friends who were family including: Thomas and Teresa Williams, of Flint; Annie Thompson, of Flushing; Jonie Greene Jackson, of Toledo, OH; JoAnna Martin, of Detroit, MI; Janice Greene Tooson, of Flint; Virgil Scott, of Flint, Michigan; Patricia Polk, of Las Vegas, NV, Yolanda Palmer of Grand Prarie, TX and the members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Lou Ella was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Dr. JC and Martha Ann Curry; sisters Patricia Ann Curry Moore and Ondria Oree Curry Jackson; great niece Asprea Savon Griffin. A very special thank you to Lou Ella’s personal nurse for the past decade. Her niece Nurse Montoya Curry Smith. There are no words to express the family’s gratitude for your sacrifice and EXCELLENT care, dedication, love, and medical advice that you provided for Aunt NuNu. Thank you.
