NEWTON, Mr. Lonnie - Age 57, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010 in Crossett, Arkansas. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 11 a.m., Pastor David Hornaday officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Newton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Lonnie Lee Newton Jr., “Rod”, was born June 18, 1953 in Crossett, Arkansas, the son of Vernestine and Lonnie Newton Sr. Lonnie graduated from Flint Central High School in 1971 and attended Michigan State University with a Full Ride Scholarship for 2 yrs, then deciding to become a fireman. Mr. Newton or “Newt” as he was affectionately called on the job, retired from the City of Flint Fire Department after 26 years of service. As the firemen would say, “Newt made sure we had water and that’s one of the key things we didn’t have to worry about.” Lonnie accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior under the leadership of Pastor David Hornaday at Calvary Life and Praise Church. Rod enjoyed cooking, making others laugh, music and watching a good movie. Children loved him and he loved them more. He enjoyed making them happy by playing games with them, taking them for walks, joking and laughing with them. Whatever they wanted him to do, he did it and they loved every minute of it! Mr. Lonnie Newton Jr. was a faithful son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him but never forgotten. He leaves to cherish his love and memory: mother, Vernestine Newton; father, Lonnie Newton Sr.; 6 children, Ta’Keshia Bradshaw, Sha’Lona, Lonnie III, Sha’Rhonda, and B’Jena Newton all of Flint, and Corderro House of Northville, MI; 10 grandchildren, LaNasha Wilder, Jerry and India Bradshaw, James White Jr., Ay’Lona and Quatrail Thomas Jr., Lonnell, MaKenna and Za’Ron Newton all of Flint, and Leah House of Northville, MI; 4 sisters, Patricia (Chris) Moore of Flint, Kathleen (Myron) Roper of Mt. Morris, Sheryl (Michael) Hightower of Clio and Andrea Newton of Flint; 2 brothers, Rufus Newton of Mt. Morris and Ricky Newton of Flint; 11 nieces and nephew;, 23 great nieces and nephews - all his favorite; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his favorite nurse Delphine Richardson. Mr. Newton was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; nephew, Marcus “Bud” Newton; and 2 aunts. The family would like to express special thanks to Raul Garcia, Ronald Thomas and Leonard Copeland.
