Mrs. Lois Bailey-Flowers

BAILEY-FLOWERS, Mrs. Lois - Age 92, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 17, 2017 at her residence in Novi, MI. Family hour 10:30 AM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Rev. Larry Whatley, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:30 AM Saturday. Mrs. Flowers will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 2:00 PM-8:00 PM on Friday. Lois was born December 12, 1924 in Newbern, Tennessee to James and Susie Bailey. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at six years old and was educated in the Newbern School System. At a young age, Lois showed a talent for sewing, drawing on a lifelong creativity that included custom-tailoring, crocheting, ceramics, macramé and quilting. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics with a concentration in Tailoring from Tennessee State University-Nashville in 1948. After graduating, she joined her family in Ohio, where she met her husband, Shannon Flowers, to that union were born Bradford, Shanna and Glynis. Lois always worked in health care, first in Ohio then at Flint’s McLaren Hospital and later retired from Flint Osteopathic Hospital as a Unit Clerk. She was active in many community activities, serving as a Cub Scout den mother in the Martin School community. An active member of Metropolitan Baptist Church for more than 50 years, Lois served as a Youth Leader for weekly Youth Fellowship and was a member of the Dorcas Circle. Retirement gave Lois time to indulge her creativity. She also was a member of the Flint Afro-American Quilter’s Guild, Michigan Quilt Network Inc. and American Quilter’s Society. Her quilts were displayed in the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit, MI and the Flint Public Library. In 1996, Lois was listed among “Who’s Who in American Quilting,” where she was lauded as a “quiltmaker, designer and instructor.” One of her quilts received second placed in a contest of 150 quilts. Lois is survived by her son, Bradford Flowers of Wayne, MI; daughters, Shanna Flowers of Roanoke, VA and Glynis Flowers of Novi, MI; grandson, Nicholas Flowers of Reno, NV; sisters, Pauline Walker of Southfield, MI and Sue Whatley of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law, Clarence (Bobbie) Flowers; a host of nieces and nephews; goddaughter, Shalunda Tucker and special friends, Bonita Riley, Eleanor James and Carlene Austin. Mrs. Flowers was preceded in death in 2007 by her husband of 53 years, Shannon; parents, Susie and James; brothers, Burnice and John Bailey; sister, Maiola; brothers-in-law, Walter Dell and Paul Flowers. Lois is survived by son Bradford Flowers of Wayne, Mich., daughters Shanna Flowers of Roanoke, Va, and Glynis Flowers of Novi. Mich.; grandson Nicholas Flowers of Reno, Nev.; sisters Pauline Walker of Southfield and Sue Whatley of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law Clarence (Bobbie) Flowers; a host of nieces and nephews; goddaughter Shalunda Tucker; other relatives and friends including, special friends, Bonita Riley, Eleanor James and Carlene Austin. The family would like to express a special acknowledgement to Glynis Flowers, who demonstrated enduring commitment and care for Lois over the past decade and particularly during the last three years as her mother became increasingly fragile. Also special acknowledgments to Fern Casasola, RN and Reverence Hospice Care in Oakland County, MI.
