THOMPSON, Mr. Leniel - Age 94, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Kith Haven Nursing Home. Family hour 10 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2109 M.L. King Ave., with funeral service commencing at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Rodney Ellison officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Thompson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Leniel “Kid” Thompson was born on February 17, 1917 in Louise, Mississippi, the son of Benson Thompson and Surella Hinton. He was the eldest of 6 children. Leniel enter the United States Army in 1941 and served his Country until 1945. He married Mamie Sanders in 1954 and they moved to Flint, Michigan in 1955 and started their family. Leniel was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and for a period of time, he volunteered his services to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Flint. When his sight began to fail, he attended the School for the Blind. Leniel loved spending time with his family and would always give you a word of wisdom. He could always say the right things to put a smile on your face. Leniel had a great reputation everywhere he went and he had a very sharp and classy style. Mr. Leniel “Kid” Thompson leaves to cherish his memory: 3 daughters, Rose M. Everett of Pontiac, MI, Vivian Thompson of Flint and Kimberly Thompson-Harper of Ann Arbor, MI; 2 sons, Timothy Thompson (Tonya Mabry) of Evansville, IN and Leniel (Velvira) Thompson, Jr. of Flint; 7 grandchildren, Ma”Kayla Thompson, Paschae Hightower, Bob Harper II, all of Ann Arbor, MI, Valont’e Thompson, Leniel Thompson III, Lytrell Thompson and Billy D. Everett, all of Flint; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Jimmie Griffin, Maude Thompson and Minnie Myers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and special friends including special niece, Sheryl Holman; special friend, Joe Aguliar. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by wife, Mamie Thompson; parents, Benson and Surella Thompson; son, Joe Thompson; sisters, Ruth Johnson and Clemmie McDowell. The family would like to express special thanks to the Third Floor Staff & Nurses of Kith Haven.
