Mr. Lawrence "Hammer" Mayo

MAYO, Mr. Lawrence "Hammer" - age 68, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Bixby Medical Center-Adrian, MI. Family hour 10 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2014 at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd. with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Patrick W. Sanders, Sr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10 a.m. Monday. Mr. Mayo will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Mr. Lawrence Mayo “Hammer” was born October 1, 1945 in Turner, Arkansas the son of the late Van Mayo and Amanda (Hoard) Mayo. Lawrence secured his eternal home by accepting Christ as his personal savior at an early age at St. Matthews Church in Turner, AR. He attended high school and received his GED after moving to Flint in 1964. Lawrence started work at Buick, a division of General Motors in 1965 and later retired in 2000. In 1966 Mr. Mayo was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in Vietnam for two years and received an Honorable Discharge. He rededicated his life to Christ and became a member of New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church. Lawrence loved his church and Pastor and attended faithfully until his health failed. Mr. Mayo loved having family over in his back yard to celebrate the holidays. He had a passion for fishing, gardening, and traveling. He especially loved going home to Holly Grove, AR. Mr. Lawrence Mayo “Hammer” leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Carolyn Mayo of 32 years; 4 daughters, Lori Mayo of Las Vegas, NV, Tomika Boose, Markita Mayo and Shawrice (Flarzell) Bell, all of Flint; 3 Sons, Gregory Mayo and Ladell Mayo, both of Little Rock, AR and Brian (April) Mason of Grand Rapids, MI; stepson, Sherman Raglon of Las Vegas, NV; 15 grandchildren, Taron, Taleisha, Kendrick, Michael Jr., Keontae, Demarion, Taveah, Antonio, Yasmin, Taylor, Johnathan, Ayanna, Jalen, Noah and Sharmale; great-granddaughter, Talayah; 2 sisters, Christan (Arthur) Kelly and Delois (Joe) Porter, all of Flint; mother-in-law, Mahalia Boose of Mt. Morris, MI; 5 sisters-in-law, Wyomie Mayo, Mae Mayo, Geraldine Mayo, all of Holly Grove, AR, Inez Mayo of St. Louis, MO and Norma (Donald) LeGrone; 2 brothers-in-law, Bernard (Linda) Boose, all of Flint and Harrison (Barbara) Boose of Redford, MI; aunt, Katie Versey of St. Louis, MO; special childhood friend, Gary Mills; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including special friends, Eugene Brown, Gene Coleman and Oceola Watson. Mr. Mayo was preceded in death by his parents, Van Mayo and Amanda (Hoard) Mayo; daughter, Shuniesa Mayo; son, Lawrence Mayo Jr..; 4 brothers, Vernon, Orlando, Melvin and Ruel Mayo; uncle, Warren Mayo. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to McLaren Hospital Nurse Tina and Aides Porsha and Jennifer. Also Grand Blanc Rehabilitation Nurses Pat and Rachelle as well as Aides Desire and Shelly. A special thanks to New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, Foss Avenue Baptist Church and Five Fold Ministry Christian Center.
