HARPER, Mrs. Katie Leugenia - Age 92, passed away Friday, April 2, 2021 at her residence. Private funeral service will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. Rev. Doug Banks, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Chapel 4:30 PM Saturday. Mrs. Harper will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday. Harper (Kate) was born in Flint, MI, November 7, 1928, she was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. (Gladys Blassingame) Ellis. Her protector and friend, was her older brother Walter J. Ellis. A Time to Die, He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting Psalm 104:19, Our family matriarch earned her wings on April 2,2021 at the age of 92. In her final years, she always said “I didn’t think I would live this long”. A Time to Plant, For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed t the sower and bread to the eater Isaiah 55:10, Katie accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized. She was a graduate of Flint Northern High School, “A Mighty Mighty Viking’ and worked for 30 years for AC Spark Plug/ Delphi, a Division of GM. She was the first African American Woman to be a finalist for “Miss AC Contest.” Katie was a member of UAW Local 651. She was an active member of Vernon Chapel A.M.E Church where she served on the Cook Missionary Society, the Food Bank, Kitchen Committee, Quilting Club, The Wacky Women’s Birthday Club. Past activities include, Charter Member of the Greater Flint Optimist Club, a Girl Scout Leader for many years and she enjoyed golfing, bowling, loved sports and was a “great debater” of most any subject, especially politics. Katie raised five children, Karlene Wells, James Harper of Flint, MI; Ambus (Stephanie) Harper of Washington DC; Douglas (Jannifer) Harper of Farmersville, Texas. She embraced a step daughter Sandra Jones of Chicago, Illinois. A Time to Pluck up that Which is Planted, And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up Galatians 6:9, “Grandmother” was a fierce competitor and she loved to play board games with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She even golfed a little bit with some of them!, Katie was a loving grandmother to Rhonda Wells- Wilbon of Columbia, Maryland; Anthony Wilbon of Bowie, Maryland; Lester (Kristen) F. Wells Jr. of Lompoc, California; Kimberly ( Henry) Hall of troy, Michigan; Ambia ( Carlos) Glaster of Washington, DC; Alaina Harper of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Adam ( Colleen) Harper, Brandon Harper, and Ashley Harper all of New York City; Nicole ( Cassius) Johnson of Dallas , Texas; Mark Harper II of Dallas, Texas; Stephen Harper of Arlington, Texas; Tracey Davison, Kelvin Skelton, Kim Saunders and Damone ( Nikki) Harper all of Flint MI; Erik ( Diedra) Jones of Seattle, Washington. Katie was a fun and supportive great- grandmother to Justin Hall of Atlanta, Georgia; Jaleise Hall of Troy, Michigan; Azaan Wilbon of Houston, Texas; Jabari Wilbon of Eastern Shore, Maryland; and Kyissa Lindsey of Lompoc, California. Austin Knight Harper of New York City. Katie had one nephew, Darian (Annetta) Ellis; one niece, Patsy (Horace) Strozier; one great-nephew, Lane (Aurdra) Ellis, and 3 great-Nieces, Michelle (Orza) Roberton, Eboni (CJ) James and Shonda Strozier. A Time to Weep. Katie also leaves to cherish her memory special cousins; Leroy (Mary) Blassingame, Duane (Diane) Miller, and Marva Hodge; a host of cousins, dear friends, her neighbor of 49 years, Shirley Iski and her Vernon Chapel Church family. Katie was preceded in death by her parents; brother Walter Ellis; nephew Walter “Lane” Ellis; son-in-law, Lester F. Wells Sr, daughter-in-law, Geraldine Harper; Sister-in-laws Isabella Ellis and Luna Downing; and special cousin Dorthy Ferguson.
