HARRIS, Ms. Joyce Marie(Luster) - Age 69, passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 at her residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, November 12, 2022 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Pastor Floyd Fuller, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Ms. Joyce Marie (Luster) Harris - Age 69, passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 at her residence in Flint, Michigan. On January 20, 1953, the world welcomed a blessing who came to be known as Joyce Marie Luster. Joyce was born to entrepreneurs, Mr. Veo F. Luster, Sr. and Rosetta Luster in Tarry, Arkansas, the third of their eight children. At a young age, Joyce left Arkansas with her family for the bustling manufacturing town of Flint, Michigan, where she would reside all of her life. Joyce thrived in Flint, Michigan as her family settled and became faithful members of Holbrook Church of God. She was known throughout the neighborhood, as a fiercely loyal big sister who would protect her family and friends. Joyce wore her loyalty like a badge of honor and was always there for those who needed her. She attended Dort Elementary School, Whittier Middle School and later became a graduate of Flint Central High School in 1971. It was during her time at Flint Central, where Joyce developed her love for drama, poetry, humanities, the arts, and activism, talents that she would later utilize in her professional career as an educator. It was also during this time that Joyce honed her quick wit and sharp mind. She loved to crack jokes and make people laugh, especially her family and friends. Joyce had a warm and captivating spirit that drew people to her like moths to a flame. Following her graduation from Eastern Michigan University, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education, Joyce began her successful teaching career with the Flint Community Schools. Joyce’s passion for education was shown through her love and care for her students, heavy involvement in student activities, student advising, and planning and coordination of various school functions. Most important of all, Joyce was able to connect and build relationships with her students, a difficult ability for many educators to master. Joyce retired from the Flint Community Schools in 1999 and was happy to devote her time and attention to her daughters, and later, her grandchildren. Eventually though, Joyce yearned to return to the classroom and began substitute teaching at various schools around the city of Flint. Once again, Joyce’s passion for education was ignited every time she helped a child learn. Joyce was so good at building relationships with students that they felt comfortable and at peace with her, with many students referring to her as “Granny.” Joyce leaves to cherish her memory: her three loving daughters, Allison Harris, Simone (Trenton) Walker and Olivia Harris, all of Flint, Michigan; her mother, Rosetta Luster of Kennesaw, Georgia; grandchildren, Nasir McKenney, Kendall Williams, Xavier McKenney, and Laurence and Malcolm Walker, all of Flint, Michigan; sisters, Rose Luster-Turner and Cheryl Wilson, both of Kennasaw, Georgia; brothers, Veo F. Luster, Jr. of Flint, Michigan and Frederick Luster of Louisville, Kentucky; mothers-in-law Sarah Banks of Little Rock, AR and Audrey Banks of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her former husband, Larry D. (Banks) Harris; her father, Veo F. Luster, Sr.; sisters, Lavern Crayton and Marilyn Luster; brother, Kalso Luster; and father-in-law, W. T. Banks. Though Joyce is gone from our presence, she will live on in our memories, hearts, smiles, and certainly in our laughter.
