Mr. John Wesley Summers Sr.

SUMMERS, Mr. John Wesley Sr. - Age 78, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 AM Friday, January 26, 2024 at Greater Emmanuel Temple Church. 1117 E. Genesee St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Pastor Melvin Davis, officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, Michigan. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Friday. Mr. Summers will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday. Mr. John Wesley Summers Sr. was born February 11, 1945 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the son of the late JP and Erie (Shumpert) Summers. John graduated from Flint Central High School, “Class of 1964.” He attended Mott Community College and completed an Associate Degree in General Studies where he pledged Phi Eta Psi. John was drafted into the United States Army on August 7, 1969, where he spent 6 years. After being Honorably Discharged, he returned to Flint where he was employed in 1972 by AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors Corporation and was a member of UAW Local #651. John retired from Delphi 2006. He opened an Adult AIS Home passionately referred to as “Agape Home”, there he employed several church members and family. John received a Certificate of Achievement in 1992 in a Ministerial Course from Aenon Bible College of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. John was an Elder of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. He received a Certificate of Participation from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated in 2009 for participation in the 62nd Northern Province Council Meeting Guide Right Program. He was instrumental in establishing the Rose Parks Memorial Garden on Caniff and Fleming Rd. John was united in Holy Matrimony on October 2, 2017 to Vergitta (Osborn) Summers. Mr. John Wesley Summers Sr. laves to cherish his memory: wife, Vergitta (Osborn) Summers; children, Bobby Washington, Domicko (Patrice) Shumpert, Jessica, John Jr. and Jaaron Summers, Karl Brown and Kraige Stroizer; grandchildren, Tricey, Deveon, Javarie, Kaison, Kayden; Quantrelle, Camron, Davin, Demai, Peyto, Karl IIIgreat-grandchildren, April, Angel, Ashley, Allen and Asia; brother, Gean (Barbara) Summers; sisters, L. Barbra Summers, Patricia Roberts and Alesia (Ronald) Peaks; brothers-in-law, Rickey Snowden and Michael Osborn; sisters-in-law, Deborah Murphy and Daneva Osborn; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Summers was preceded in death by his parents, JP and Erie (Shumpert) Summers; brother, Olander “Sonny” Summers; nephew, Derrick Roberts; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.
