BATTLE, Mr. John - Age 85, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016 at Heritage Manor. He will be taken to Rogan's Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway St., Hugo, OK 74743. (580)326-6145 Fax (580) 326-6146. Interment Speer County Cemetery, Choctaw County, OK. Mr. Battle now lies in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. Mr. John E. Battle “J.E.” departed this life Friday, March 4, 2016 in Flint, Michigan. “J.E.” was born January 4, 1931 in Hugo, Oklahoma, the son of George and Mary (James) Battle. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and lived on the farm in Soper most of his life. “J.E.” worked on construction in Oklahoma during the building of the Indian Nation Turnpike and also maintained the family farm. He was an active member of the Oak Grove CME Church in Soper, Oklahoma until it’s closing, afterward he attended Paul’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Hugo, Oklahoma. “J.E.” was in charge of the Speer Community Cemetery until his health failed. He made sure that the cemetery was kept clean and was there to welcome family and friends returning to their final resting place. Mr. John E. Battle “J.E.” leaves to cherish his memory: sons, Ronnie Fort of Houston, Texas and Glen Smith of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; sisters, Lillian (John) Feaster and Juanita Battle; brothers, James Battle and Nathaniel (Mahala) Battle, all of Flint, Michigan; sisters-in-law, Rose Battle of Charleston, South Carolina and Mary Battle of Burton, Michigan; several nieces, nephews, cousins including special cousins, Carl Baker, David James, both of Oklahoma, City, Oklahoma; a host of friends including special friend, Carolyn Lattimore of Hugo, Oklahoma. Mr. Battle was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Battle; sister, Leona Freeman of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brothers, Roscoe Battle of Charleston, South Carolina and Earl Battle; sister-in-law, Mildred Battle, both of Flint, Michigan; and several other relatives. The family would like to express special thanks to Rev. Roylia Akins, Pastor of Hugo Chapel Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. David Monk, Pastor of Paul’s Chapel United Methodist Church family.
