Joann Owens-Reed

OWENS-REED, Mrs. Joann - Age 68, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2007 in Maricopa, Arizona. Graveside Service 11AM Saturday, October 20, 2007 at River Rest Cemetery Mausoleum, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr., officiating. Friends and family will assemble at cemetery 11AM Saturday. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Mrs. Owens-Reed will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1PM-8PM Friday with preferred visitation from 3PM-6PM. Mrs. JoAnn Owens-Reed was born March 28, 1939 in Flint, Michigan the daughter of Wendell and Robin Owens. JoAnn resided in Glendale, Arizona and was formerly of Flint. She attended Flint Public Schools and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with honors. JoAnn was a member of My Father's House Christian Church in El Mirage, AZ and former member of Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church Flint. She taught deaf and hard of hearing in Los Angeles, CA. She also taught Educable Mentally Retarded and Learning Disabled and Emotionally Impaired for Carman Ainsworth District. She was a Title One teacher in Carman Ainsworth District and the first Parent Advocate for the Flint School District. JoAnn was a member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc., Alpha Kappa Sorority, Eastern Michigan Adahi Honorary Society and Phi Delta Pi Society. She also was a former member of Greater Flint Afro American Hall of Fame, Golferettes League, Inner City Golf League, Executive Board of Carman Ainsworth Education Association and the Flint Board of Education. JoAnn was an avid reader. She enjoyed singing in the choir, golfing, traveling, and sports in general. She also loved arts and crafts, her hats and suits, spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. JoAnn Owens-Reed leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Willie "Pete" Reed; daughter, Kim (Darryl) Williams of Lithia Springs, GA; 2 sons, Petty Officer First Class Troy Reed of Sasebo, Japan and David Reed of Dayton, OH; 3 grandchildren, Keith George of Phoenix, AZ, Brianna Reed of Atlanta, GA and Dante Reed of Kagawa, Japan; sister, Robin J. (Billy) Fields of Flint; cousin, Maureen Kersey; a host of nieces and nephews of Flint, California, Ohio, Georgia and Illinois, many special friends and relatives including Dwayne (Helene) Gurley, Louise Gurley, Dewey Clark, Evelyn Meredith, Leta Wilkerson and Mancine Broome. Mrs. Owens-Reed was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents. The family would like to express special thanks to Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr. and the Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church family and Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home.
