MICKENS, Deacon Jimmie "Ice Man"- Age 59, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Family hour 10AM Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Our Savior Apostolic Church, 1502 Bennett, with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Dist. Eld. Curtis Lytle officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10AM Tuesday. Mr. Mickens will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1-8PM Monday. Deacon Jimmie “Ice Man” Micken was born April 29, 1949 in Brierfield, Alabama, the son of Dorothy Mickens John L. Coleman. Jimmie moved to Flint in 1969 and began his career at Buick City a Division of General Motors, retiring in 2007 after 30 years of dedicated service. In year of 1988, he left home one day a met a man name Jesus, he repented and was baptized in Jesus name for the remission of his sins and received the gift of the Holy Ghost (according to Acts 2:38) and from that day forward he became faithful to God and an active member of Our Savior Apostolic Church, where he served faithfully on the Deacon, Usher and Trustee Boards, prayer meetings, Sunday school department and whatever else he could find to do. It brought him great joy to talk about his church, the Holy Scriptures and the goodness of God. Jimmie nightly routine was to stay awake most of the night studying God’s word. He said, “Once I pick it up, I just can’t put it down.” Jimmie took great pride in two of his most famous dishes, barbeque and coon. Jimmie loved his entire family, and whenever he had an opportunity he would travel to Pittsburgh to visit his mother who was affectionally known as “Madear”. He had a special, unique and individual relationship with all of his children, grandchildren and especially his wife. Throughout the day you would mostly hear him saying, “Yes Pat” or “Ok Pat”. Jimmie was an advocate for community service, he volunteered his time whenever he could, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Crim Festival of Races, Citizens of Flint Police, Citizens of Flint Township Police, countless Neighborhood Crime Watches, Security for Bunche and Gundry Elementary Schools and to many others to name. Jimmie will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife of 28 years, Patricia Mickens of Flint; 4 daughters, Angela Ivy, Jamika Panek, MaQuetta Walker, all of Flint and Sharmaine Lawson of Little Rock, AR; 2 sons, Jimmie Ivy of Flint and Ronald Dotson of Pittsburgh, PA; 4 step children all of whom he raised, Alvin Moye, Sharee (Richardo) Chew, Marlon (Nekia) Moye, all of Flint and Sharron Moye of Southfield, MI; 25 grandchildren; 5 sisters, Ina Ray Farrington of Montevalla, AL, Vera Blackwell of Flint, Ethel (Charles) Scott of Atlanta, GA, Dorothy Mickens, and Linda (Louis) Murray of Pittsburgh, PA; 7 brothers, Jessie Mickens, Charles Brazier, Tommie (Kelly) Mickens, Orlando, Daniel, and Aaron Green, Bobby (Anna) Mickens, all of Pittsburgh, PA; uncle, Calvin Coleman of Alabama; 2 sisters-in-law; 4 brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Mickens was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Green; father, John L. Coleman; brothers, Herman and Donald Mickens. The family would like to express special thanks to District Elder Curtis Lytle, Our Savior Apostolic Church and Ebenezer Ministries.
