Mr. James Lawrence Overton

OVERTON, Bro. James Lawrence - Age 76, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at his residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 4805 N. Saginaw, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Rev. Dr. Henry Fuller Jr., officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Wednesday. Mr. Overton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-8:00 PM Tuesday. Bro. James L. Overton went home to be with his heavenly Father on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. James was born in Hertford, North Carolina to the late, Frank Wallace and Elnora Overton. He attended Perquiman County Schools. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in search of a better life. There he met and started dating a young lady, Gurline, for several years and she became his wife. While living in Brooklyn, New York, he was gainfully employed with Metropolitan Mill Works where he worked for ten years. James moved to Flint, Michigan, September of 1969 and became employed with Chevrolet Assembly and later Fisher Body, divisions of General Motors Corporation. After the strike in 1969 and 70’s, James started driving for Ryder Systems until he retired after 35 years of employment. Two years after retirement, James gained employment with the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home until his health failed him. James was an active member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Voices of Calvary, Male Chorus and an active member of the Security In Ministry until he became ill. James leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 56 years, Gurline; daughter, Janeen (Patrick) Williams; adopted daughter, Sarah (Steven) Copeland; son James B. Overton (Tina); six grandsons, James, Myles, Alexander, Theron, James L. and Shaun; three granddaughters, Morgan, Mariah and Gabby; great-grandson, Semaj; two great-granddaughters, Semajia and Gabriella; three brothers, Thomas Overton, Charles (Pat) Overton and Marvin (Perlinda) Overton; three sisters, Rosetta, Roberta and Sandra Overton; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Overton; three brothers-in-law, Chester Davis of Newport News, VA and Lester Davis of Glen Burnie, MD, John Lewis (Janette) Leigh of Creswell, NC and Robert Leigh of Edenton, NC; sisters-in-law, Beulah Payne, Audrey Moore, Pearl Leigh, Louise Chestnut and Betty Royal, all of Brooklyn, NY; he also leaves a host of nieces and cousins including special cousins, David and Mary Overton; a host of friends including special friends, Edward and Margaret Bartlett, Johnnie & Evelyn Hollowell, Floyd and Peggy Johnson, Charles Leigh, Joe and Mildred Hollowell, Charles and Ruby Jones. Bro. Overton was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elnora Overton; sister, Lillie; four brothers, Frank, Jr., Isiah, Johnny and Haywood; father and mother-in-law, Lester and Naomi Davis; sisters-in-law, Faye, Ester, Rosie, Belle, Marie and Mae; four brothers-in-law, Freddy, James, Clarence and Peter. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Danish, Dr. E. Saeed, Dr. Seedahmed, the fourth and ninth floor nurses at Hurley Medical Center; special nurses, Tina Smith and Lorrie Dearing, Pastor Henry L. Fuller, Jr., and the Mt. Calvary Church family.
