JENKINS, Ira Pastor Hurtis - Age 98, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Symphony of Linden Assisted Living Center. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, October 14, 2023, at St. John Christian Church, 1525 S. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Derek Nolen, officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Pastor Jenkins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday. Rev Ira Hurtis Jenkins Sr. went home to be with the Lord on October 10, 2023. He was born on December 20, 1924, in Chipley FL to Charlie and Flora (Mosby) Jenkins. Ira resided in Trenton, NJ for a number of years until he relocated to Flint, MI and ultimately Mt Morris, MI with wife of 47 years, Dorothy Mae (Dot) in the early 1950’s. Ira began to grow as a disciple of Christ by way of development and spiritual growth at Mt Nebo Baptist Church in Mt Morris, MI and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Flint, MI and thereafter, opened the doors of St John Missionary Baptist Church in the mid 1980’s. Rev Jenkins retired from a long service with General Motors Corporation in the mid 1980’s and spent much of his subsequent time towards the development of St John and its congregation. Rev Jenkins retired yet again his duties as Pastor, relinquishing leadership of St John to nephew and Pastors Derek and Tomara Nolen in January 2013. Rev Ira H. Jenkins Sr. leaves to cherish his memory and loving legacy: daughter, Gloria Evans of Beverly, NJ; son, Ira (Wendy) Jenkins Jr. of Whitehouse Station, NJ; three grandsons, Thomas Lee of Trenton, NJ, Michael Powell of Flint, MI and Justin Jenkins of Jersey City, NJ; four granddaughters, Nichole (Alphonso) Lee-Crawford of Delanco, NJ, LaToya Powell of Detroit, MI, Erika Lee of New York, NY, and T’Neya (Kirby) Jenkins-Easley of Ypsilanti, MI, two sisters-in-law, Merlena Ferguson of San Rafeal, CA, and Jacqueline Broadway of Flint; brother-in-law, Daniel Miles of Flint; countless great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins across the country; and other relatives and friends. Rev Jenkins is preceded in death by his wife, Dot, who passed in April of 2011; and son, Leon who passed in November 2020. The family would like to express thanks to Dr Kristen Dziadula, Cheryl Lambert, Kerry Traynor and the staff at Symphony of Linden for the all the care and support they’ve rendered during his stay as well as St John Christian Church for their never-ending support and continuation of the Legacy of Rev. Ira H. Jenkins Sr.
