Mr. Herschel Roberts

ROBERTS, Mr. Herschel - Age 61, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at his residence. Funeral Service commencing at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Saints of God Church, 528 W. Pierson Rd. Pastor Alfred L. Harris, Sr., officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 11 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Roberts will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12 noon-8 p.m. Monday with family hour from 6-8 p.m. with family present. Mr. Herschel Roberts was born June 6, 1952 in Flint, MI, to parents, Nelson and Willie Bea Roberts, Sr., he was the youngest of four children. Herschel married Kathy Michelle Welch on July 26, 1986. To this union two sons were born. Herschel attended Flint Community Schools, graduating from Northern High School, "Class of 1970." Herschel first entered the workforce in 1970 with Genesee Bank before a stellar and dedicated 33 years with Mass Transportation Authority (MTA). His charisma and sincerity brought joy to his many passengers throughout the years. Being courteous, respectful, polite and honorable; the traits of a gentleman, which made Herschel unique, will live on through his three sons Dwan Finney, Herschel Rumeil Roberts, and Michael Joseph Roberts. Herschel was famous for his involvement with vintage automobiles including ownership of his favorites being a '57 Plymouth and '51 Chevrolet. He was an awesome cook, especially during the holidays and family celebrations. His final grand achievement was his acceptance of Christ Jesus as his Lord and Savior, being baptized by Pastor Alfred L. Harris, Sr., and becoming an active member of Saints of God Church. Brother Herschel leaves to continue his legacy: wife, Kathy of 27 years; three sons, Dwan (Valorie) of Phoenix, AZ, Herschel Rumeil of Cincinnati, OH and Michael Joseph of Lansing, MI; the joy of his life, twin grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brenton of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Mavis Collins of Flint, MI; brothers, Nelson Roberts, Jr., of Burton, MI and Charles Roberts of Rochester Hills, MI; aunts, Helen Brown and Mary Glenn of Cleveland, OH; uncle, Joseph (Juanita) Roberts of Palm Desert, CA; father & mother-in-law, Kermit and Constance Welch, Jr., of Flint, MI; sisters-in-law, Angela (Steve) Staten of Burton, MI, Katrina (David) Smith of Falls Church, VA, Karla Lawrence of Mt. Morris, MI; brother-in-law; Kermit (Zerell) Welch, III of Leeseburg, VA; aunts, Martha Mays and Marie Welch of Flint, Mi; special nephews, Bobby, Calvin, Jermain and Tony; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends including Larry and Inez Goodman, Maurice and Karen Vickers, Kay Hatchett, Navarro Lockett, Ronald Thomas, and Lawrence Cooley: The Poindexter, Finney, Willis, Dye, and Hamlett families: two goddaughters, Sparkle and Danora. Brother Herschel was preceded in death by parents, Nelson and Willie Bea Roberts; grandmothers, Annie Fuller and Millie Roberts; grandfathers, Charles Fuller and Joseph Roberts, Sr.; nieces, Patty Collins and Denise Johnson; aunt, Mazie English; uncles, Willie English and Rev. Louis Mays. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to family, friends, and love ones for all acts of kindness, love and support. Special Thanks to Pastor Alfred and Sis.
