WILSON, Mrs. Helen A. - Age 87, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, March 7, 2020 at House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church, 1851 W. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Kenneth L. Stewart, officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, 5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Wilson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM Friday with the family present from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM to receive friends. Helen A. Wilson was born January 13, 1933 in Parkland, Arkansas, the daughter of Jebtee (Miller) Young and William Stubbs. Helen was raised in Flint, Michigan and attended Flint Public Schools. She was a longtime faithful member of the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church, joining in 1966 under the leadership of the late Rev. Charlie Thrower. Helen served as the Armor-Bearer for her current Pastor, Kenneth L. Stewart. She served faithfully on the Board of Trustees at House of Prayer until her illness. Helen also served on the Senior Usher Board, Kitchen Committee and Shephard Partners. She was an advocate for being on time and she proved that to be true in her regular timely attendance to Sunday School and Bible Study. Helen was a graduate of Agape Fellowship Bible College under the leadership of Pastor D. Joseph Rodriguez Sr., graduating in 1999 as a member of the class of “Men and Women of Valor.” She was employed at A.C. Spark Plug, a division of General Motors Corporation for 45 years where she worked both on production and supervision, retiring in 1995. Helen was the Matriarch of her family and she lived up to that title. She loved spending time with her family which was evident by her attendance at family gatherings even when she wasn’t feeling her best. Helen encouraged others to strive for excellence and took pride in celebrating the accomplishments of her family. She enjoyed playing different games; her favorite being Hand and Foot. She was an avid gardener and would often invite family and friends to her home for a good home cooked meal and fun fellowship. Helen was a giver and was always willing to help her family and those in need if they were trying to better themselves. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping and she delighted in picking up a little something special for others because she knew that it would make their day. Helen loved travelling, seeing this great world God created and encouraged others to do the same; her favorite vacations were to cruise like the rich and famous. Helen was loved by many and will be dearly missed by her family, friends and her House of Prayer Church family. Helen A. Wilson leaves in God’s care; 3 sons, William (Punkin) Hawkins Jr., Courtney Hawkins Sr. and Larry Franklin; devoted daughter and caregiver, Ava (Sterling) Murry, all of Flint; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Donna M. Young; brother-in-law, Alfonzo Dantzler Sr., both of Flint; 25 nieces; 16 nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Jebtee and Darous Young Sr., William and Katherine Stubbs; son, Zachary Franklin; grandson, Tanell Burke Sr.; sisters, Earnestine Weatherspoon, Nonetha Dantzler, Armazell (Dusty) Copeland, Ola Mae (Dolly) Young, Dorotha Calloway, Omelia Young, Dorothy Mae Greenlee and Ella Jeanette Billings; brothers, Ernie Lee Young and Darous Young Jr.; god-father, Rev. Charlie Thrower; god-mother, Myrtle Pea. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Schumacher and staff, Dr. Ramaiyah, Dr. Raj, Dr. Sebi, Hurley Medical Center staff, Deborah Harris and Barbara Nesbitt.
