WALKER, Mrs. Harriette Callie - age 83, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Briarwood Manor. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Walker will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Harriette C. Walker (Callie Marshall) was born March 28, 1930 in Jackson, TN. She was the only daughter of her loving parents Gloria Mayo and Harvey Marshall. Her family moved her to Saginaw, MI at an early age where she was educated in the local Christian schools and she received an Associate’s degree from college. She met and married Harry J. Walker on September 25, 1950 in Saginaw, MI and they were married for 61 years before he passed away. From their loving marriage they had four children: Orlanda of Flint, Vincent of Wilmington, DE, Timothy of Newark, DE and Phillip of Flint. She had 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was a courageous woman who shared her love with everyone. She never met a stranger. One of her goals in life was to empower young people and uplift women. She loved people, pets and politics. Some of Her Life’s Work: • Member of Christ the King and Sacred Heart Church for over 50 yrs. • March 1974: “Women of the Year” awarded by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter • June 1986: State Promoter of the “Miss Galaxy Pageant” • 1987 “Sojourner Truth Award” from the Nat’l Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. The club’s top honor. • February 1994: “Planning & Development” award by The Community Coalition • May 1997: 25 Years of Dedication and Devotion to “The People and Animals of Genesee County” • February 1998: State of Michigan Special Tribute, “Wednesday Morning Prayer Breakfast” • May 2007: 35 Years of Service, Big Brothers Big Sisters • Certificate of Appreciation, American Cancer Society, Inc., Genesee County Unit • Owner: M&M Modeling School • Assistance Director: Heart in the City • Participated with the “Concerned Pastors of Flint” • “Richfield Township Vice President”, 9th District. First black woman elected to hold a township office. • Humane Society: Volunteered taking her dogs, cat, parrot and skunk to area nursing homes to entertain patients. • Board of Directors (20 yrs.): Odyssey House Flint • Creator of the “Only Child Club” • Companion Dog Training Club of Flint: Obedience trained and competed with dogs for over 30 year Mrs. Harriette C. Walker leaves in God’s care: children, Orlanda, Vincent, Timothy (Janie) and Phillip (Fatima); grandchildren, Marty Jr., Kevin, Orlisha, DeMarcus, Timia, Jasmine (Jazzy), Vincent Jr., Austin, and Phillip Jr.; and 3 great grandchildren.
