Mrs. Gussie Nell Ulmer

ULMER, Mrs. Gussie Nell - Age 77, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2024, at her residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Stephen Murphy, officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd., Burton, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Thursday. Mrs. Ulmer will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Wednesday, November 6, 2024, with family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Gussie Nell Ulmer was born September 19, 1948, in Jayess, Mississippi. She was born the middle child (seventh) to Oliver and Hazel (Gutter) Manning. She graduated from McCullough High School in Monticello, Mississippi. Nell accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age, at Salem MBC, in Jayess, MS. After moving to Flint, Michigan, she joined Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle and volunteered her time with many ministries, including the Metropolitan Inspirational Voices, the Scholarship Committee, and the Kitchen Ministry. Nell was employed by Fisher Body and Chevrolet V-8 Engine Plant, divisions of General Motors Corporation. In her free time, she enjoyed bowling, playing softball as member of “The Angels” (where she played 3rd base), making floral arrangements, gardening, and collecting bells. She was a true Detroit Piston’s Fan, win or lose. An expert in the kitchen, she was known for her dressing, candied yams, and banana pudding. Socially, she was affiliated with the Royal Star Chapter 27 OES, Order of the Golden Circle, the Ladies of the Circle of Perfection, Heroines of Jericho, and the Red Hatter. Nell is survived by: her loving son, Wesley (Chasity) Ulmer; daughter, Tina Jackson; grandchildren, Tatiana (Karl) and Laila Ulmer, Darius Phillips, Rodney Phillips, and Tachari Phillips, all of Flint; great-grandchildren, DeMarkus Bracy Jr., Ka’Shaila Jackson; sisters, Betty Brown, Sara Hill, and Kepsa Thomas, all of Flint; brothers, Kellie Manning, Billy Manning, all of Flint and David Mims of California; sisters-n-law, Lillie Manning of Foxworth, MS, Modean Manning of Columbia, MS and Gertie Ulmer of Texas; brother-n-law, Lieutenant Ulmer of Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Specially noted are god-daughters, LaToya Oglesby, LaTonda Anderson, and Kayla Naylor; god-son, Henry Traylor; adopted sons, Lamont Davis and Pat Redds; special friends, Lorraine Boyles, Beatrice and Henry Traylor, Irma Stokes, Virginia Carroll, Emma Jean Roland, Barbara Wright, Marisa Jarrett, Montrel Givens and the Orange Lane Block Club. Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Oliver Manning; sisters, Nettie Grace Green, Ethel Mearl Manning, Lillie Magee, and Mary Coleman; brothers, Oliver “OJ” Manning, James “Pete” Manning, Artis “Rico” Manning, and Robert “Bob” Manning; nephews, DeleChep Hill, Robert Manning II, and Oliver “Bootney” Manning; brothers-n-law, Joe Green and Glen Brown.
