KIRKLAND, Mr. Grover C. "G.C." - Age 75, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 11AM Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Bethel United Methodist, 1309 N. Ballenger Hwy., with funeral service commencing at 12Noon, Rev. Dr. Tara Sutton officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11AM Saturday. Mr. Kirkland will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10AM-2PM Friday. Afterwhich, Mr. Kirkland will be taken to Bethel United Methodist Church for a Memorial Service from 5-7PM. Mr. Grover Cleveland “G.C.” Kirkland was born February 3, 1934 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the son of Grover Cleveland and Josephine (Lewis) Kirkland. Grover was the sixth of nine children. He attended Hopewell Vocational High School and Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. Grover moved to Flint in December 1953. He was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army in 1958. On July 27, 1958, he married his wife of 51 years, Myrna Poke and to this union two children were born, Andre and Rhonda. Grover worked at General Motors Chevrolet Truck Assembly Plant, retiring in 1987 as a supervisor with 34 years of dedicated service. He loved fishing, hunting and growing vegetables. Grover took pride in his lawn and flowers; also attending to and planting flowers at his church. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Men, where he sang with the Male Chorus for special programs. He was Vice-President of the Lapeer Street Area Neighborhood Association Inc., and a member of the Alcorn Alumni Flint and Saginaw Chapter. Mr. Grover C. “G.C.” Kirkland leaves to cherish his memories: loving wife of 51 years, Myrna Kirkland; son, Andre; daughter, Rhonda (Brian) Willingham; 4 grandchildren, Andrea’ Kirkland, Dorian, Brittany and Brandon Willingham; 2 sisters, Ruthie (Julius) Winston of Chicago, IL and Maudie Rene (David) Jordan of Greenwood, MS; 2 brothers, Grover L. (Earlean) Kirkland and Nelson (Linda) Kirkland of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear and caring friends especially, Paul (Lenora) Whitmore, James (Earnestine) Jackson, The Wilsons, The McGee’s, Charlie, (his Garden Buddies), longtime friend, “Willie”, Alcorn Alumni Chapter, Neighborhood friends and his Bethel United Methodist Church family. Mr. Kirkland was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland and Josephine Kirkland; brothers, Monroe, Woodrow and Eugene Kirkland; and sister, Beatrice Kirkland Aldridge. The family would like to express special thanks to Hurley Medical Center Emergency Department and Paramedics.
