Mr. Gregory Burks Sr.

BURKS, Mr. Gregory Sr., - Age 66, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, July 9, 2022 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Rev. Clifford Burks, officiating. Interment, Sunset Hills Cemetery. G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at Chapel 10:00 AM Saturday. Mr. Burks will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E, Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM Friday, with family present to receive friends from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM. On April 18, 1956, Thelma and Paul Burks welcomed their son, Gregory Burks, Sr. to the world. Greg was born and raised in the city of Flint, Michigan. Greg graduated from Flint Southwestern High School and was a three-sport athlete. At Flint Southwestern, he played football for legendary coach, Dar Christian, while also playing basketball and running track and field. Following high school, Greg attended Western Michigan University, where he ran track for one season before returning to Flint, Michigan. In 1978, Greg married Cassandra (Williams) Burks, and they birthed one son, Gregory Burks, II. After high school and college, he went on to work for General Motors foe twenty-four years. Greg had a passion for teaching youth basketball, for which he started with his son at an early age. Greg soon became a pillar in the Flint community due to his ambition for teaching youth both basketball and life skills. This ambition led Greg to create an AAU basketball team called the Flint Stars. In 1992, the Flint Stars AAU team would place fourth nationally in the country. The Flint Stars AAU program assisted in helping more than twenty teenagers receive scholarships to play basketball at the collegiate level. Greg also helped coach basketball at Flint Northern with coach and friend Darnell Hughley. In addition to basketball, Greg loved to fish. You often could catch him on the lake at dawn fishing. Greg and his fishing buddies would, as he would say, “hit the lake” as much as he could in the summer. In his later years, Greg moved to Houston, Texas, where he continued his fishing hobby while also taking up refereeing Gregory leaves to cherish his memory: son, Gregory (Erica) Burks of Smyrna, GA; sister, Lynett Love of Flint, MI; brother, Perry Burks of Columbia, TN; and a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Cassandra Burks of Flint, MI and Dr. Lou Ellen (Willis) Aghedo. Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Thelma Burks; sister, Cathy Moore; brothers, Paul “Scottie” and Alvin Burks.
