SCOTT, Mrs. Gladys - Age 87, passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 at her residence. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Beta Omega Chapter, Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony 9:00 AM Saturday, November, 16, 2019 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 424 Kennelworth Ave., with family hour at 10:00 AM and funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Pastor Javon Catlett, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 9:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Scott will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday. Mrs. Gladys Laird-Scott was born on November 23, 1930 in Pulaski, Tennessee to Zelnar & Gussie Mae Ferguson-Laird. At an early age, her parents moved Gladys and her siblings Zelnar Jr. and Mary Helen to Louisville, Kentucky. This is where she was raised and developed into a studious, caring and encouraging young lady. She graduated from Central High School as valedictorian. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Wilberforce University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Gladys moved to Flint, Michigan in 1954 where she met and married Henry A. Scott. Their union resulted in a cherished daughter, Vicki Denise Scott. Gladys was employed by the Flint Board of Education for 37 years. During her tenure she served in many positions, including classroom teacher, learning strategist, and assistant principal for Instruction. She was listed in the 1988-89 edition of Who’s Who in American Education. Gladys was a Life Member and a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She was initiated in the Zeta Chapter at Wilberforce University in 1952. She was a very active and devoted Soror of Zeta Beta Omega Chapter (Flint, MI). She held several leadership roles including serving as Basileus (President), chairing a Michigan Cluster meeting, and co-chairing the 59th Great Lakes Regional Conference. She attended every Regional Conference and Boule (National Convention) from 1954 – 2006. She was also a founding member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., where she served as Basileus as well. Additionally, she was active in several other organizations including: Association of Childhood Education (ACE), National Regional Association, University of Michigan Alumnae Association, National Reading Association, & NAACP. Gladys was also a steadfast member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, well over fifty years; where she served on several committees. Gladys had a zeal for life and loved activities that brought her joy including shopping, baking, traveling, and playing bridge. She was a faithful wife, devoted mother, caring grandmother, loving great-grandmother, and a kind aunt. Mrs. Gladys Laird-Scott leaves to cherish her loving memory: daughter, Vicki (Dwayne) Harris; grandchildren, Erica (James II) Mallett and Jason Harris; great grandchildren, Madison, Kennedy and James (III) Mallett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends & cherished roommate, S. Marnise Limbrick-Roberts.
