Mr. Gerald Leon Moore

MOORE, Mr. Gerald Leon - Age 87, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024, at Regency of Grand Blanc. Family hour 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Stephen Murphy, officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Wednesday. Mr. Moore will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Tuesday. Mr. Gerald Leon Moore, Sr. was born September 25, 1936, in Flint, Michigan. He was the second of five sons born to Willie B. and Evelyn Moore. Gerald married Brenda Rhodes and to this union two wonderful children were born, Monica and three years later, Gerald Jr. He later married Marlene Childress and gained another wonderful daughter, Jeri. Gerald attended Flint public schools where he was introduced to Drafting in seventh grade and found it fascinating. He continued to study drafting at Flint Northern High School, where he was also an avid baseball player. Gerald was encouraged to pursue further education by mentors, including Mrs. Odell Broadway. Following high school, he enrolled in Eastern Michigan University’s industrial arts curriculum and later in Flint Junior College where he took more drafting courses. After completing his education, Gerald worked at AC Spark Plug and was promoted as their first black engineer. Gerald was a lifelong, faithful member of Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle. He loved his family, church family, and his friends. Gerald never met a stranger, always having plenty of conversation and stories to tell for whoever would listen, he touched many lives. Gerald was always around sports as a child. He developed a deep love of sports and sports trivia. One of his greatest accomplishments was authoring the book “Moore than a Man,” about growing up with his father, Willie B. Moore, Sr., who was an avid softball player, bowler and the first black registered to umpire in the city of Flint. In 1983, Gerald served as a Founding Board Member of the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame, where he served for many years. Gerald’s love of sports and his community led him to also serve for eighteen years (1995-2013) as a Board Member of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame, where he served in virtually every Board capacity and committee assignment. Through his willingness to serve whenever and wherever needed, Gerald was respectfully regarded by his colleagues as the organization’s “Ambassador.” Mr. Gerald Leon Moore Sr. leaves to cherish his memory: son, Gerald & Michelle Moore, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Jeri & Lee Murphy of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Andrea Mosley and Jessica Mosley of Memphis, TN, Sydnee Gaines of Middle River, MD and Arianna Ingram of Dallas, TX; great-grandchildren, Zoe Mosley of Memphis, TN, Jadian Scisco of Cincinnati, OH, Jerrin and Aubree Gaines of Middle River, MD; great-great-grandchild, Blake Scisco of Cincinnati, OH; niece, Shawn Gray of Dallas, TX; nephews, Roderick, Cory, Ivan and Jason Moore; first cousins, Craig & Lennetta Coney and Renita Coney Mays, all of Flint, MI; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends including special friends: Rogie Barnett, Norm & Kay Bryant, Willie & Lillian Dickerson and Bill Basilius. Gerald was preceded in death by his daughter, Monica Mosley; parents, Willie B. and Evelyn Moore, Sr.; grandparents, Reuben and Millie Moore; brothers, Alvin, James, Willie B., Jr., and Raymond Moore; aunts, Ruby Stevenson, Mildred Isabel, and Cloteal Coney; uncles, Lonnie L. Coney and James White.
