SWIMS, Mr. George - Age 87, passed away Friday, April 18, 2025, at his residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Foss Avenue Baptist Church, 1159 E. Foss Avenue with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Rev. Dr. Brian C. Frelix, Host Pastor. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:00 AM Wednesday. Mr. Swims will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and a Memorial Viewing will be held Tuesday, April 29, 2025 from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM. George Milton Swims was born June 26, 1937, in Carrollton, Mississippi to Martha Swims. He was the second of nine siblings. Some of his earliest childhood memories include making slingshots out of tire rubber and shooting birds with marbles. So it’s no surprise that he was a sharpshooter when he joined the United States Army in 1956. George served honorably as a Private First Class in the 793rd Military Police Battalion in Germany. Upon his return home, George married Ruth Swims in 1958. Soon after, they followed his big brother Alexander “Fat” to Flint, Michigan, for better opportunities and to start their family. George became an Electrician and worked as a Skilled Trade Supervisor at General Motors Truck and Bus for 49.5 years. He had a strong work ethic, perfect attendance and was often called on to solve the most complicated problems. George took great pride in providing for his family and enjoyed spoiling his kids and grandkids. He made sure they each had their favorite snacks whenever they visited and he selflessly poured into their dreams to ensure they had every opportunity to succeed. George was a man of his word and expected the same in return. George accepted Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior and was a member of Foss Avenue Baptist Church. His all-time favorite song was “My Soul has been Anchored in the Lord.” George was a closet comedian and an amazing storyteller. He often reenacted his favorite funny moments, starting with his signature line, “Boy, I’ll tell you the truth!” He was a student of life and loved to share his vast knowledge and wisdom. George always maintained an immaculate yard, a clean car, and an organized garage, and he enjoyed hosting his family for the holidays. After he retired, he loved to spend quality time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren. After years of hard work, he finally learned to relax and found pleasure in Hallmark movies, ugly sweater Christmas parties, and making TikTok videos with his family. George was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Swims; daughter Johanna Massey; grandson Quintin Breyon LeFlore; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Fontenot; mother, Martha Swims; siblings, Alexander, Clinton, Roy, Betty Jean, Peggy Ruth and Lindall. George Milton Swims leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Terry Swims of Flint, Michigan, Anetta (John) Speed of Westerville, Ohio, and Margaret (Thurman) Taylor of Caledonia, Michigan; son, Michael Conerly of Crandall, Texas; son-in-law, Calvin Massey of Grand Blanc, Michigan; siblings, Richard (Ruby) Carter and Willie (Deborah) Carter; grandchildren, Khadija Swims, Mekeva Conerly, Keionnie (Adrian) Owens, Krystal Conerly, Ashley (Ryann) Lee, Kendra (Charles) Brown, Keith Speed, Alana Taylor, Paris Henderson, Alesha Hendricks, Tori (Johnny) Knott, Alexandria Speed, Travon Fountain, Tyeion Norton, Germani Jacobs and Geriyah Jacobs; great-grandchildren, Roy and Ryan Fontenot, Braxton Owens, Lyric Allums, Aubrey LeFlore, Zoe Henderson-Atkins, Julian Knott, Kaiden Clark, Ayden Taylor, Alexander Owens, Khristian Knott, Cairo Brown, Thomas Hendricks III, Emery Lee, Kree Speed-Carter, Kade Brown and Evan Lee; and a host of special family and friends. Mr. Swims was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army.
