Mr. Garey Lee Simon

SIMON, Mr. Garey Lee - Age 69, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024 in Marksville, LA. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 424 Kennelworth Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Rev. Dr. Major Stewart, officiating. Interment Starlight Baptist Church Cemetery, Marksville, LA. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Saturday. Mr. Simon will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday, with family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Garey Lee Simon was born October 2, 1954 to Earnest Simon and Pearline Conway Simon and Rev. Tellis Simon Jr and Ida Simon in Pineville, LA. He was fortunate enough to have two sets of parents. He was the fifth of ten children to Earnest and Pearline and the first of sixth children to Rev. Tellis and Ida. With the blessings of being reared in a loving Christian home, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Starlight Baptist Church in Marksville, Louisiana, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Clifton Jones. He remained a faithful member of Starlight Baptist Church until his move to Flint, Michigan, in 1968. He attended Canaan Missionary Baptist Church and then became a faithful member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church until his untimely passing. From an early age, Garey always exhibited an exceptional work ethic. While attending Flint Southwestern High School, Garey went to work with his father, Tellis Jr, at his personal construction company. Shortly thereafter, he was hired at General Motors, where his career started and he remained a dedicated employee for 51 years at various locations in the Flint and Detroit areas. Garey was very active and supportive in his church; he served in the security ministry and was a devoted choir member. Garey enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, where he served on the Greater Flint USBC board for 22 years. During his bowling career he accomplished one 300 and two 297 games. Garey loved to tell stories and he was a great conversationalist. Long story short, he was a workaholic, but in his leisure time, he enjoyed watching western movies, golf, and spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. If you knew Garey, football was his guilty pleasure and win or lose, he was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Garey leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kristian Simon and Shamonica Simon of Flint, Michigan and one son, Antonio (Kimmesi) Woods of Galloway, Ohio; three grandchildren, Khamryn Simon-Mcdonald, Najaya Woods, and Avonna Simon; his mother, Ida Simon; ten brothers and sisters, Michael (Jessie) Simon, Gloria (Robert) Augustine, Earl Sanders, Opal (Rev. Vernon) James, Debra (Michael) Ford, and Charlene Simon, all of Marksville, Louisiana and Fedrico Simon, Kimberlyn Simon Pearson, Terry Simon, all of Flint, Michigan, and Youvalanda (Dr. Stanley) Frencher of Rochester Hills, Michigan; two godchildren, Robin Carter of Marksville, Louisiana and Carl Elliot Holmes of Marrero, Louisiana; special aunts, Barbara (Eual) Simon Hall of Zachary, LA, Hazel Benson of Chicago, Illinois, and Sylvia Batiste of Marksville, Louisiana; the mothers of his children, Karen Simon and Lorita Woods Simon; the entire Woods Family; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearline Simon; fathers, Earnest Simon and Rev. Tellis Simon Jr.; brothers: Aaron Simon, Lionel Simon, Robert Simon, and Tellis Simon III; and sister, Rev. Dr. Bernadine Simon Davis.
