Mrs. Florene Wheaton

WHEATON, Mrs. Florene - Age 101, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at her residence. Family hour 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Dianne Beverly officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10 a.m. Friday. Mrs. Wheaton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Florene Wheaton was born on February 19, 1912 in Springhill, Mississippi. She was the 7th of 11 children born to Malachi Madison and Arcenia Smiley. Florene attended Springhill Methodist Church where in 1935, she married Q.W. Wheaton. In 1944, Florene followed Q.W. to Flint, with her two oldest children, Willie and Helen. She became a member of James Chapel C.M.E. and added two more sons to her family, Rudolph and Rene. Florene loved the Lord and His word. She raised her children in the church and on that word. “Trust in the Lord and always let the things you do, speak for you" was her motto. Florene was passionate about gardening and loved her roses. Cooking for her family and singing in the Senior Choir were also her joys. Her children and grandchildren also remember her home remedies of Father John, horehound candy and willow tree switches. Florene had a dry sense of humor which she passed on to her sons and grandsons. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Helen A. (Alton) Thorn; son, Dr. Rudolph D .Wheaton; daughter-in-law, Ruth Wheaton; 9 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces especially, Ethel Shaw of Gulfport, MS; a host of nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends will also mourn her passing. Mrs. Wheaton was preceded death by her husband, Q.W.; sons, Rene and Willie C.; granddaughter, Chanda J. Jones; parents, Malachi and Arcenia Madison; 11 brothers and sisters. The family would like to express special thanks to Kim Barrett and Lisa Stone of the Hospice Advantage Team, who took such tender loving care of their mother during her final months of life.
