Mrs. Ella Mae Coney

CONEY, Mrs. Ella Mae - Age 90, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023, in Tennessee. Family hour 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Stephen Murphy, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Wednesday. Mrs. Coney will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Tuesday with family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Ella Mae Coney (Hilbert), was born on Jan 30, 1933 in Osyka Mississippi, the daughter of Lena Barnes Hilbert and Mannie Hilbert Sr. She accepted the Lord at an early age and grew up worshipping at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church and singing at various churches throughout the area. She loved gospel music and was particularly fond of Shirley Caesar and Lee Wil-liams and was a long time member of Metropolitan Bap-tist Church in Flint. At the age of 22 she married the love of her life, Ulysses Coney Jr., and journeyed to Flint MI to start their new life. Ella Mae loved to work in her garden and plant flowers. Her talent for designing flowerbeds and growing several different houseplants was only matched by skills cooking and baking. While she could cook literally anything from scratch; she was famous for her homemade dinner rolls, and holiday fruit cakes. Although she became ill, she continued to trust in God and was a fighter to the very end. She was a classy lady and loved to look her best. Her style was always notice-able with her over the top hats and fur coats. She loved her kids, especially her grand children and great grand children. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for any of them. There wasn’t an ailment that she didn’t have a home remedy to cure. Ella Mae Coney was preceded in death by her husband Ulysses Coney Jr., daughter Creshenda Artis, parents Mannie and Lena Hilbert, five brothers, Mannie Hilbert Jr., Arthur, Leroy, Charlie, and Perlie Hilbert; four sisters, Ma-mie Hilbert Nathan, Lizzie Mae Hilbert-Williams, Lexie Leonard, Arnita Sim-mons, and Kathleen Walton. She leaves to cherish her memory, sons Rev. Donald and (Sonya) Coney (Lewisburg, TN), Derrick Coney (Washington DC), Greg and (Melvina) Coney (Columbus, OH), and Son in Law Andre Artis (Flint, MI). Grand children Michael (Christina) Coney, Antonio (Jessica) Fordham, India Coney and Donald Coney Jr., Andre Artis Jr., SeLaih Artis. Great grand children Dejah, Jesaun, Samaiya, Evelyn, Anaya, Neriah, and Brennox. God-daughter, Arie Carrol: special (adopted) son and neighbor, Charles (Nylar) Jupree, and a host of nieces and nephews. A special thanks to our cousin Fermeko (Peachy) (Alan) Myles, for overseeing her care, and special friend Bernetta Allen. Also, to Dr. Musson, Briarwood Care facility and all the family, friends who scarified their time to show how much they cared.
