HOLT, Mr. Elbert Eugene, Sr. "Jack" - Age 89, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Avalon Hospice. The Eureka Lodge No 16, Prince Hall Affiliation Service Thursday, April 22, 2010 from 10-10:30 a.m. at Quinn Chapel A.M.E., 2101 Lippincott Blvd., Family hour to be held at 10:30 a.m., and the funeral service will commence at 11 a.m., Pastor Stanley U. Sims officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Holt will lie in state in the Sanctuary of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Wednesday with The Oman Temple #72 Service from 6-7 p.m. along with Saginaw Valley Consistory #71. Mr. Elbert Eugene “Jack” Holt, Sr. was born March 28, 1921 in Dickson, Tennessee, the son of Louis and Maggie (Perkins) Holt. Elbert was a graduate of Hampton High School in Dickson, Tennessee with honors as Salutatorian and President of his class. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. He later pursued his educational desire by attending Tennessee State University. His ambitions led him to various jobs in Chicago, IL, South Bend, IN, and finally to Flint, where he resided for nearly 60 years. Elbert retired as a Skilled Tradesman of almost 30 years from General Motors Metal Fabricating Plant. On March 28, 1958, he was united in marriage to Ernestine Brown. His family, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren were the love and joy of his life. His hobbies included gardening, landscaping, photography, cooking and traveling. Brother Holt’s loved and loyalty for Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church was portrayed as; Trustee Emeritus, President Emeritus of the Senior Usher Board, Chairman of Security In Ministry and a member of the Kitchen Ministry. He received numerous awards and certificates from the church including; “Man of The Year” in 1991, Recognition and Appreciation of Security In Ministry as Major Emeritus in 2004. Elbert was a longtime active member of the Fraternal Order of Eureka Lodge No.16, Prince Hall Affiliation, Saginaw Valley Consistory No. 71, Prince Hall Affiliation, Oman Temple No.72, Prince Hall Affiliation, where he was an Honorary Past Imperial Potentate. Honors bestowed on him included the President’s Award of Recognition of Service and Appreciation from the Flint NAACP Branch in 1992, 1996, 1997 and 2001. Elbert always focused on his high school motto, “Don’t Itch for Success, Scratch for It.” He leaves to cherish his memory: dear an devoted wife of 52 years, Ernestine Holt; son, Elbert Eugene (Darlene) Holt, Jr. of East Lansing, MI; daughter, Shirley (Tom) Bowman of Nashville, TN; godson, Major Phillip (Roxanne) Wadsworth of Starkwell, MS; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Reverend Robert L. Brown of Grand Rapids, MI and Leslie Brown of Vicksburg, MS; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends including beloved families, Alston, Battle, Boone, Edwards, Feaster, Lee, Lusk, Petty, Taylor, Vaughn and Wadsworth. Mr. Holt was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Mrs. Deborah Ann Holt Lusk. The family would like to express special thanks to Lisa Lindsey, Nurse Practitioner, the staff of Avalon Hospice, Hurley Medical Center, Ivy Place, Kith Haven Nursing Home, Woodland Park Home, Rev.
