HAMLETT, Deacon Edward Sr., - Age 81, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at his residence. Family hour 11:00 AM Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church, 2120 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 12:00 PM Pastor Keith Bigelow Sr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11:00 AM Saturday. Deacon Hamlett will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday. Deacon Edward Hamlett Sr., passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the age of 81. Edward was born December 25, 1936 in Batesville, Mississippi, the son of Curtis Johnson Sr. and Ophelia Hamlett Dixon. He was a resident of Flint, Michigan and a faithful member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church since arriving in 1966. Deacon Hamlett served on the Deacon Board, in the Choir and the Laymen of Great Lakes District Association. He attended Hernando High School in Hernando, MS and then to college on a Football Scholarship (but however he was tackled by a skinny boy that knocked the wind out of him, lol). Edward was employed at Fisher Body Grand Blanc and was a member of UAW Local #1292 retiring after 42 years of service. He enjoyed eating good food, watching TV especially westerns, Gunsmoke, Walker Texas Ranger and Bonanza. Edward was a down to earth person with a soft voice and a big heart. He loved his family, his church family and he loved to dress. Eddie would help anyone that he could. His nickname was “Fast Eddie” even though he walked real slow. He will be truly missed. Deacon Edward Hamlett Sr. leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Bertha Hamlett; 3 daughters, Angela (Andre) Richard, Evelyn Hamlett and Monica (Alvin) Callaway; 5 step-children, Sherral Wills, Percy Bates Sr., Raychell Bates, Alicia Bates, all of Flint and Perry (Dayna) Bates of Colorado Springs, CO; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; mother, Ophelia Dixon; 4 sisters, Geneva (Louis) Spears, all of Flint, Elizabeth (Duane) Adams, Doris Stirrup, all of New York and Barbara (Paul) Johnson of Connecticut; 2 aunts, Margeret Wren and Lorene Wren; 3 uncles, Relias (Earlene) Wren, Oliver (Versie0 Wren and Joel Johnson of Batesville, MS; sister-in-law, Barbara Jean Bates; brother-in-law, Isreal Bates, both of Leighton, AL; mother of his children, Mildred Grigsby of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins including special cousin, Bertha Irby of Batesville, MS; a host of other relatives and friends including, Jacari Westrock and best friend, Dea. J.D. Chapman. Deacon Hamlett was preceded in death by his sons, Karl and Edwards Hamlett Jr.; father, Curtis Johnson Sr.; brothers, Joe Allen Hamlett, Stanley Misher and Larry Johnson; sister-in-law, Vera Hamlett; aunts and uncles. The family would like to express special thanks to Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church family, Dea. J.D. Chapman and family, Sis. Kathy Townsend, Percy Bates Sr., Monica Calloway, caregiver, Bianca Bates, Corey Pulliman and Fred Anthony.
