Ms. Earnestean Holmes

HOLMES, Ms. Earnestean - Age 78, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 at McLaren-Flint. Memorial service 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 19, 2016 at New Beginnings Ministries, G-5227 Beecher Rd. Apostle Clarence Lewis officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 11:00 AM Saturday. There will be no public viewing. Age 78 of Flint, Michigan passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 at McLaren Hospital. She was born October 25, 1938 in Stuttgart, Arkansas to E. Hollis Holmes and Lucenia Taylor Holmes. Earnestean graduated from Flint Central High School and then went on to receive an Associate Degree in Fashion and Design from Academy Nvart Couture Design in Southfield, MI. She received an early retirement from General Motors Personnel with more than 25 years of service. Since her retirement she volunteered extensively in the community with Urban League Black Scholars, Flint Inner City Golf League, African American Quilters, Flint Institute of Arts as a Docent and the trustee board, Friends of the Flint Public Library, Genesee County Counting Board, and worked on the committee to re-elect President Obama. In 2013 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in African Studies from the University of Michigan-Flint. She received volunteer awards from the Urban League, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Zeta Beta Omega Chapter, Michigan Quilt Network, Left Bank Gallery, Greater Flint Arts Council, Flint Institute of Arts, Outstanding Community Volunteer, University of Michigan and the Golden Key International Honor Society-University of Michigan –Flint. Earnestean was an avid fiber artist who created designs of texture in multi-media prints, note cards, story book quilts and art quilts. She taught students in the community about other cultures, and to learn about their history and heritage through the art of quilting, music and folklore. In addition, she was a master quilter. In 2005, she was the winner of the Michigan All Media Invitational at the Left Bank Gallery. She is survived by son Darryl (Joy) Holmes, daughter in law Valerie Williams-Holmes, grandchildren, Michael Holmes Jr., Cherese (Sam) Shannon, Nicole Holmes and Milan Holmes, Great-grandchildren DeAndre Upchurch and Marcus Holmes, brother Bernard (Virgina) Holmes, brother in law Dr. Cullian Hill, sisters Hazel (Billy) Bradshaw and Bernadine Walker, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by parents E. Hollis and Lucenia Holmes, sister Lucille Hill, son Michael Holmes Sr.
