Mrs. Dorothy Waller

WALLER, Mrs. Dorothy - Age 92, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at Regency - Grand Blanc, MI. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2015 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 424 Kennelworth Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Major A. Stewart officiating. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Waller will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Dorothy (Hawkins) Waller was born September 26, 1922 in Flint, MI, the daughter of Sumpter R. and Gertrude (Charleston) Hawkins. She was a 1940 graduate of Flint Central High School. An employee of General Motors for 17 years, a mathematics teacher for 24 years and an adjunct lecturer in the Mathematics Department at University of Michigan – Flint. Dorothy was a member of Mt. olive Missionary Baptist Church. During her adult life she held memberships in The Links, Inc. - Flint Area Chapter; Flint Council Choir, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Flint Golferettes, Tuesday-Wednesday Bridge Club, Phi Delta Kappa, The Pierians, Inc. Flint Chapter; Flint Snowbirds Ski Club, Flint Choral Ensemble, Central Flint Optimist and Flint Community Ensemble. Dorothy served on The University of Michigan – Flint Advisory Board, University of Michigan Alumni Governing Board, Genesee County Social Service Board, Friends of WFBE, Friends of the Flint Public Library and as a Volunteer Mathematics Teacher. Mrs. Dorothy Waller is survived by her husband of 72 years, Frederick Simpson Waller, her best friend and traveling buddy. They enjoyed trips to Spain, Africa, Israel, Austria, Egypt, China, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama and the Caribbean Islands. She is survived by daughter, Nadirah Hasan; 8 grandchildren, Morris (Lashon) English, Derrick English, Anthony (Valerie) English, Danell (Anna) English, Rakisha Hasan, Fard Hasan, Hanafi (Alicia) Malik, Ridwan (Shabazz) Malik; 21 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Waller. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and her Mount Olive Church family. Mrs. Waller was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Dr. James E. Hawkins (Madeline), Charleston A. (Evelyn) Hawkins and Herman Hawkins; 4 sisters, Dessiree McBride, Laura McLaurine, Zelma Hawkins and Arlene Banner; 4 siblings who died in infancy.
