JENKINS, Mrs. Dorothy - Age 81, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Family hour 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1525 S. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Ira Jenkins, Sr., officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Jenkins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Dorothy Mae Jenkins “Dot.” Dorothy was born June 10, 1929 in Gaston, North Carolina to Samuel and Fannie (Ashe) Powell. “Dot” accepted Christ at an early age at Gaston Baptist Church. She was educated at Northampton County Schools. In 1953 she married Rev. Ira H. Jenkins Sr. “Dot” was a resident of Mt. Morris, MI since 1959. She was the beloved First Lady of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Flint, MI. Prior to her retirement in 2007, she worked in various capacities ranging from domestic employment to elegant catering until her illness limited her mobility. “Dot” enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Cooking was one of her favorite pastimes. Her famous rolls and brownies were envied by many and enjoyed by all. Mrs. Dorothy Mae Jenkins leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her loving legacy: devoted husband, Rev. Ira H. Jenkins, Sr. of Mt. Morris, MI; two sons, Roy Leon Powell of Grand Blanc, MI and Ira (Wendy) Jenkins, Jr. of Whitehouse Station, NJ; daughter, Gloria Evans of Trenton, NJ; three grandsons, Thomas Lee, Jr. of Trenton, NJ, Michael Powell of Flint and Justin Jenkins of Whitehouse Station, NJ; four granddaughters, Nichelle (Alphonzo) Lee-Crawford of Trenton, NJ, LaToya Powell of Detroit, MI, Erika Lee of New York, NY and T’Neya Jenkins of Ypsilanti, MI; nine great grandchildren; three sisters, Merlena Ferguson of San Rafael, CA, Pearlie Nolen of Grand Blanc, MI and Jacqueline Broadway of Flint; brother, Daniel C. Miles of Parma, OH; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Potter of Flint and Thelma Jenkins of Panama City, FL; aunt, Magnolia Allen of Emporia, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives including special niece, Patricia “Dale” Jacobs and goddaughter, Kristen Nolen-Winfield. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Fannie. The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Eugene Chardoul M.D., the staff at the McLaren Regional Cancer Institute, and the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Family.
