Mother Dorothy Chilton

CHILTON, Mother Dorothy - age 88, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center Briarwood. Family hour 11 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2014 at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, 8266 N Vassar Rd., Mt. Morris, MI. with funeral service commencing at 12 p.m. Pastor T.J. Lee officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, 5175 E. Bristol Rd., Burton, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11 a.m. Friday. Mother Chilton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. Mother Dorothy Howard Chilton was born December 25, 1925 in Homer, Louisiana the daughter of Joe and Oletha Brown. She was raised in Arkansas. After accepting Christ, she moved to Portland, Oregon where she married Robert Howard and had 3 children from that union. After the termination of her first marriage, she married John Henry Chilton and raised his daughter as her own. Mother Chilton was a founding member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church and a legendary seamstress throughout Michigan. She had sewn for weddings, choirs and proms from the 1950’s - 2001. When she retired her sewing machine she was employed with Service Cleaners and Troy Cleaners. Her legacy will live on. Mother Dorothy Howard Chilton leaves to cherish her memory: 3 daughters, Loretta (Edward) Carr and Dorothy Mullins, both of Flint and Linda Chilton of Concord, NC; 8 grandchildren, Lavetta (Jamelle) Phillips of Wayne, MI, Sabrina (Lester) Buckley of Flushing, MI, Sharela (Richard) Turner of Auburn Hills, MI, Aaron Mullins, Edward (Teresa) Carr, Jr., Amad Chilton, Lanona Chilton and LaToya Chilton, all of Flint; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Jaye B. (Connie) Brown of Georgia, James (Robbie) Sullivan of Colorado, and Billie Brown of Flint; 4 sisters-in-law, Charlie Mae Howard-Buford of Portland, Oregon, Bessie Greene, Viola Greene, and Emma Chilton, all of Flint; brother-in-law, David Chilton of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mother Chilton was preceded in death by: husbands, John Henry Chilton and Robert Howard; son, Jimmy Howard; parents, Joe and Oletha Brown; 3 sisters, Ethelene Evans, Jean Sullivan and Audrey Dorsey; brother, Bill Brown.
