FLIPPEN, Mrs. Cecile - Age 87, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Oakwood Hospital-Dearborn, MI. Family hour 10 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Rev. Faith Timmons officiating. Interment Crestwood Memorial Cemetery, 2020 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10 a.m. Friday. Mrs. Flippen will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday with family present from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Former Flint resident Cecile (Murrell) Flippen, 87 died February 12, 2014 with her family by her side at Oakwood Hospital Dearborn, MI. Cecile was one of six children born October 13, 1926 in Itta Bena, Mississippi to the late Colonel and Cecil Murrell. Cecile attended Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi obtaining a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. Cecile began her career as an educator in Mississippi. She moved to Flint, Michigan in 1960 where she continued to teach for the Beecher School District. She taught first grade for over 30 years. Cecile met and married Charles Curtis Flippen. Cecile and Charles raised three children and enjoyed a long and loving marriage. Cecile was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women and participated in the Under Shepards Program. Mrs. Flippen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Flippen; parents, Colonel and Cecil Murrell; brothers, Colonel and Andrew Murrell; sisters, Doretha Bush and Nola Liddell. Cecile is survived by two daughters, Cheryl and Carol Flippen; son, Drs. Charles (Jennifer) Flippen II; grandsons, Brad, Charles III and Spencer Flippen; great-granddaughter, Kennedy Cecile Flippen; sister, Mattie Carroll; a host of nieces, nephews and beloved family members. Mrs. Cecile Flippen was the backbone and spirit of her family. She consistently modeled excellence in deed and manner for her children (both family and school). Her quiet manner belied an adventurous spirit, great sense of humor and an artful conversationalist. Cecile enjoyed listening to music, shopping, travel,exercising her considerable artistic talents decorating her classrooms, reading and solving crossword and word search puzzles. She was devoted to family and friends providing a ready meal, warm smile and words of encouragement when needed. She has left a legacy of charity and service through her church service and providing scholarships to undergraduate students of her alma mater, Rust College. Her bright smile, gentle strength and graceful presence will be missed.
