SPIGHT, Mrs. Carolyn J. Age - 82, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Hurley Medical Center. Family Hour 10:00AM Friday, February 5, 2021 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Entombment at Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:00 AM Friday. Mrs. Spight will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday, with the family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Sister Carolyn Jean (Black) Spight, Sunrise November 16th, 1938 Sunset, January 26th, 2021.The passing of a faithful servant of the Lord at Hurley Medical Center. “Jean” as old-time friends called her, was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in West Memphis, Arkansas. The only daughter born to Roy and Connie Black, along with two brothers. She graduated from J.S. Phelix High School, Class of 1954. Jean continued to attend her high school class reunions until the 2019 gathering. She also obtained an Associate Degree from Okolona College in Okolona, Mississippi. On July 9th, 1957, Jean and David Louis were united in Holy Matrimony and moved to Flint, Michigan. To this union 3 children were born, two daughters and one son. Carolyn Jean was a loving, generous, no nonsense mother to her children and to all the children she would meet and mentor in her lifetime. Carolyn worked for 25 years as a Medical Transcriber in the Operating arena of Hurley Medical Center, retiring in 1982. Sis. Spight was a lifelong member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, uniting with the church in 1961. At that time the church was located on Industrial and McClellan Street. The late Rev. Matthew Montgomery was the Pastor. She was a past member of the Gospel chorus, but because of her fierce love for young people, she taught Sunday School for many, many years. Carolyn was constantly giving back to her community. Serving as Sunday School Superintendent for several years, she was an instructor for classes in the Young People Division of the Great Lakes Baptist District Association-Wolverine State Convention and the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. She was A former teacher with the Foss Avenue Christian School, H.O.S.T.S. (Helping One Student to Succeed) Mentoring Program, Mt. Calvary’s Strive for Excellence Program, and the Committed to Excellence Program for Flint Community Schools. She was a frequent instructor for “Night Sunday School” at Macedonia and Mount Hermon M.B. Churches. Carolyn instructed all of her students the Biblical keys of life and stressed to them how important it is to always put God first in your life. If they would accept Jesus, trust in the Lord, they would be saved, they would have life, and they have life more abundantly. (John 10:10) . Just like she stressed Christian education, she demanded excellence in general education. She valued higher education for all of her students and was A Black History expert. One cannot know where your future leads if you do not know your past. Sis. Spight was also a lover of the arts; she was a season ticket holder at The Whiting Auditorium. Sister Carolyn Jean Spight leaves to cherish her precious memory: two daughters, Connie (Donzelle) Graham of St. Clair Shores, MI and Deidré Elizabeth Spight-Woodson of Flint; son, Dr. David Wayne (Alana) Spight of Minnetonka, MN; her one and only granddaughter, Maya Carolyn Woodson, “Grams Girl” of Allendale, MI; bonus grandson, Dakarai Tidwell of Flint; and a host of countless others; god-daughter, Dr. Erica Rena Allen of Pickens, MS; two cousins, Irma Griffin of Griffin, GA and Laurie Blake of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A favorite Sunday School Teacher for generations of young people. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Connie Black; two brothers, Roy Black Jr. and Leonard Black; nephew, Taurus Black; three special lifelong friends, Julia Wynn, Eva Starling and Lela Koger. The family would like to express special thanks to Mother Estelle Rawls, the Motley family, Eva’s kids, Bobbie Lane, the Donald Johnson family, the Yarber family, Derrek and Regina Williams, Sylean Harris, the Young family, the McQueen family, Alice Hinton, the Reaves family, the Poplar family, Christine Brown, Jo Ruth Richmond, Mt.
