Mother Brenda Rea Southward

SOUTHWARD, Mother Brenda Rea - Age 69, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at Hurley Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mother Brenda Rea Southward was born June 6, 1955, in Flint, Michigan, the 3rd oldest and only daughter of McQueen and Martha (Bates) Southward. Brenda graduated from Flint Northern High School and attended Mott Community College. She was employed at Hartland Manor as a Nurse then became a Pharmacy Technician, retiring in 1993 after 171/2 years of service. Brenda was the Pure Definition of Tough Love, she was a protector for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a die-hard strong woman and would help anyone who was in need. It did not matter what the circumstances were, "Brenda was there". Brenda enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking all types of delicious soul food, planting beautiful flowers, and most of all being in the yard. In her spare time, she loved doing jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, crocheting beautiful blankets and being with her Old School West Philadelphia Blvd Neighbors. Mother Southward Was a member at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor R.D. Anderson Jr. In her later years, she had rededicated her life back to the church under the fellowship of Pastor Terry Randolph. Mother Southward leaves to cherish her beloved memory: daughter, Monica Southward; son, Curtis Winfrey both of Flint, Ml; 3 grandsons; DeMarcus Southward, Joseph Williams Jr., and Cameron Winfrey all of Flint, Ml; 2 Great Granddaughters; Lila Williams and Nova Southward both of Flint, Ml; 2 stepdaughters; Jacqueline Wells of Oakland, CA and Stephanie Winfrey of Flint, Ml; step grandsons Antoine Wells and Courtney Wells both of Oakland, CA; step granddaughters Brittani Shelton and Jayla Lloyd; 7 step great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; Carl Southward of Flint, Ml and Courtney Southward of Indianapolis, IN; 2 aunts; Effie Martin and Ruby Mae Brock both of Tishomingo, MS; 6 nephews; 3 nieces; Our Winfrey Family and host of other relatives. Mother Southward was preceded in death by her parents, McQueen and Martha Southward, her beloved longtime companion, Curtis L. Winfrey; brothers Elmer, Gary, Willie and Kenneth Southward; nephew Montenez Smith Sr.; Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Adiraj Singh, Hurley One Plaza 2nd floor, Dr. Aahish Valvani from Hurley ICU Unit and Staff on the 4th floor, Pastor Terry Randolph and the entire Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church family, Pastor Edward Burns, Brearieonna Thompson , Pastor Norman McLemore of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, Ann Strong, Karol Barber, her special friend Micah "Boo-Boo" Murdock for her faithful visits when she came to Flint. Also, our family would like to express a special Thank You and A Job Well Done to her daughter Monica for all her hard work, strong dedication and love for taking care of her mother since her sickness.
