Mrs. Bettye Jewel Compton

COMPTON, Mrs. Bettye Jewel - Age 94, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023, at her residence. Family hour 10:30 AM Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Stephen Murphy, officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Eastern Star Ceremony will be held Friday, October 13, 2023 at 5:00 PM. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Saturday. There will be no public viewing. I am the seventh of eleven children born to John and Idella McDaniel, in Blackwell, Arkansas. I graduated from Desha Central High School in McGhee, Arkansas, and attended, at that time ,the Arkansas Mechanical & Normal College in Pine Bluff. I worked for the Board of Education for four years and then moved to Flint, Michigan with my husband. Here, I attended Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint, where I received a B.A. Degree in Early Childhood Education, and was employed as a Substitute Teacher and then a full time Teacher. My late husband, Jerry E. Compton, and I, were the parents of four children, Jerry Jr., LaManuel, Chyrita, and Derrick. We have twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. As a born again Christian, I have been a member of Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle for over sixty years. Church work has always been importat to me. I am on the Senior Choir, have served as Captain and Co-Chair of the Noon Day Prayer Group, Captain of the Dorcas Missionary for over twenty years, Secretary and a Teacher of the Missionary Parent Body—under Mrs. Dye, a worker in the Floral Club and the Christ Alive Group. I am a Past Member of the Housing Commission, and Christian Education, and I was a Sunday School Teacher for several years. Away from my church home, I am a Member of the Great Lakes Women Auxiliary, Church Women United, an Inspirational Speaker, and a City-Wide Advisory Member for the 2nd Ward. I have been an Easter Star Member for over forty years, received their highest honor as “Royal Lady”, was Pastor Supreme Deputy of the State of Michigan, and have received many national achievements and awards. My hobbies also keep me busy. I love to read, sing, shop, teach, write poems and plays, as well as direct them. Proverbs 3:5, 6 is my favorite Bible Verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding: In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” I love to sing, and Walk With Me, Lord is my favorite son. I leave to cherish my loving memories: 2 sons, Lamanuel of Detroit, MI and Derrick of Flint; sister, Jetta Davis of Los Angeles, CA; 8 grandchildren, Kia (Willie) Serwaa, Sania Compton, all of Chesapeake, VA, Kisha of Flint, Lamanuel Jr. of Towaco, NJ, Nicholas of Durham, NC, Morgan (Rene Jr.) Bedgood of Atlanta, GA, LaChyara (Jemez) Quander of Largo, MD and Deonte Golden of Flint; honorary granddaughter, Taqualia Weems of Flint; 6 great-grandchildren, Promise Golden, A’Nie Compton, Anya Lee, Anyx Jewel Serwaa, Celenna Compton, Soleila Quander and Rene Bedgood III; god-daughter, Joyce Benton; god-grandchildren, Tony and Ricky White, Larnell, Jeremy and Avayon Benton; a host of dear and close friends, Pearl Coney, Eleanora James and family; a host of other friends and loved ones. I am preceded in death by her husband, Jerry G. Compton Sr.; son, Jerry G. Compton Jr.; daughter, Mrs. Chyrita M. Golden; parents, John and Idella McDaniel; sisters, Lee Ethel Flemon and Ida King; brothers, Herman, Sherman, William, Clarence, Bobby, Lamar and Otis McDaniel.
