HAWKINS, Mrs. Betty - Age 73, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 at Genesys Health Park. Family hour 11AM Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Quinn Chapel AME Church, 2101 Lippincott Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 12NOON. Pastor Stanley U. Sims, officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 11AM Thursday. Mrs. Hawkins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 11AM-8PM Wednesday. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to unto you: Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled neither be afraid. John 14:27 Mrs. Betty Jean (Wallace) Hawkins was born October 30, 1932 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Walter Lee and Blanche (Hamilton) Wallace. Betty married Lester Hawkins, Sr. on February 1, 1958 and this union was blessed with 4 children. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Retiring from the Flint Board of Education as a school counselor. In the 1980?s she was known as a columnist for the Flint Enquirer and participated with the Jack and Jill Club, and Exchangettes Group. Mrs. Hawkins was a faithful servant of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church since 1947. She served on numerous committees and organizations within her church such as: President of the Turner Missionary Society, Steward Board, YPD, LAY Organizations, Sunday School staff, Liturgical dance group - Seasoned Souls, Chancellor Choir, past Vice-President of the Michigan Missionary Conference and Chairperson of the Mission and Welfare Committee. In her final hours, she was doing what she loved best, co-organizing the Missionary Emphasis Day at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church. Mrs. Betty Jean Hawkins leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Lester Hawkins, Sr., daughter, Carolynn (Chappeus) Wilson; 3 sons, Derrek, Greg (Sharmeen), and Lester (Candy) of Atlanta, GA; 3 grandchildren, Kyle, Kanishia, and Deja; sister, Gwen (Bill) Avery of Birmingham, AL; Betty will be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews, grand god-daughter, Jackie; a host of relatives and many, many dear friends. Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by parents; sisters, Ruth Wallace Bankston, Berdetta Wallace Upshaw, and Berlee Wallace Dawson; brothers, Neal and Walter Wallace.
