STEWART, Mrs. Bettie Lou - Age 73, was called home to glory, Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 1:30PM Saturday, May 2, 2009 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 2PM, Rev. Howard Patrick officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 1:30PM Saturday. Mrs. Stewart will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 1PM-8PM Friday. Mrs. Bettie Lou (Smith) Stewart was born October 8, 1935 in Eutaw, Alabama to the late Hattie Lucille Thomas and the late Mannie Smith. She was raised by the late Mother Ada Turner. Bettie accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on many capacities including Choir Soloist and Bible Study Teacher. After leaving Alabama, she resided in Detroit and then Flint, Michigan, where she worked at St. Joseph Hospital as an Anesthesia Aide from 1968 to 1997. She was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the African American Quilters. Bettie was active in many community activities including volunteering at Voter’s Registration. She enjoyed many activities, especially walking in the Crim 5K and 10K and the Mackinaw Island Bridge walk. Bettie was married to the late Richard Stewart. She leaves to cherish her memory: 3 children, Dr. Ronald C. (Dr. Vlenaetha) Stewart, Larry Stewart and Allise Wright, daughter of the late Memory Wright; grandchildren, Inella Biggs, Nathaniel Stewart, Onika Arrington, Emily Stewart and Jazaris Arrington; great-grandchildren, Shari’ Ontay Smith, Omar Guy, Jr., Frank Keys III, Quintin Pugh Jr., and Kimiya McKenze; daughter-in-law, Beverly Biggs-Leavy; family members, Rosalee Hassey and Geneva Thomas; aunt, Ruby Bowman; niece, Denise Washington of Buffalo, NY; a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her mothers, Hattie Lucille Thomas and Ada Turner; father, Mannie Smith; and brother, Lindburgh Kimbrough.
