Bernice Conyers

CONYERS, Mrs. Bernice - Age 80, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2012 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley St., with Mass commencing at 11 a.m. Father Thomas Firestone, celebrant. Interment New Calvary Catholic Cemetery, G-4142 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Conyers will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Bernice Therese Conyers was born September 25, 1931 in Savannah, Georgia to Sam and Maggie (Best) Sheftall. In 1951, Bernice received her diploma from Beach high school in Savannah, Georgia. She then went to College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Savannah State College, in 1955. In, January of 1955, Bernice Sheftall and Louis Conyers were united in marriage and upon her graduation relocated to Flint, Michigan. Bernice became a dedicated homemaker and periodically worked outside the home as a laboratory technician at Flint Osteopathic Hospital and Flint General Hospital. She later was employed as a substitute teacher in Flint Community Schools. Bernice was involved in numerous of community service activities, one special to her heart; The HOSTS Mentoring program. She was also, actively involved in many church activities and committees at St. Agnes Catholic Church, until its closing. She then became a member of Saint John Vianney Church. Bernice was an avid bingo player; hence the name “Queen B”, had a love for gardening, beautiful flowers and Detroit Pistons. She leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved husband, Louis Conyers of Flint; loving daughter, Desiree Conyers of Ann Arbor, MI; faithful son, Kenneth Conyers (Nikeeta) of Belleville, MI; precious granddaughters, Aireka Reeves (JR Holden) of Novi, MI, Serrita Conyers (Nick Jude) of Flint and Phyllis Conyers (Joseph Karaska) of Belleville, MI; great-grandchildren, Ocean and Ontario Jude, Miyana Holden, Adelynn and Amillya Karaska; nephew, Sherman Sheftall of Las Vegas, NV; in-laws; Ethel L (Billy) Kearse, Maserine (Lee) Bolling, Louverda Gadson, Maldotha Conyers, Mary-Etta Thomas and Woodrow Conyers; special son-in-law, Ryan Reeves; "special" daughters, Monica Conyers and Estella Vasquez; a host of nieces, nephews and friends including special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis (Venita) Campbell, Mr. Ernest Cook, Mrs. Mary Ann McLemore and Mr. and Mrs. Alvern (Theresa) Lock. Mrs. Conyers was preceded in death by her daughter; Mardese Conyers-Holmes; son, Anthony Conyers; grandson Jo’Van B. Conyers; parents, Sam and Maggie Sheftall; grandmother, Rosa Best; 2 brothers, Joe Best and Sam Sheftall Jr. The family would like to thank Fr. Tom Firestone and Saint John Vianney Catholic Church.
