YOUNG, Pastor Benjamin F. - Age 87, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019 at his residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, June 22, 2019 at New Zion Baptist Church, 1601 Chippewa St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Rev. Jacob Hawkins, Host Pastor, Pastor Edward Burns, Jr. officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, 5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Pastor Young will lie in state at Providence Baptist Church, 916 E. Jamieson St. and may be viewed 12:00 PM -7:00 PM Friday. Pastor Emeritus Benjamin F. Young Sr. was born on June 22, 1931 in Fulton, Arkansas, the son of Isiah and Lena Young. He is the oldest of 9 children. Pastor graduated from Clow High School class of 1950 and was Class President as well as an outstanding basketball and track star. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953 earning an Honorable Discharge in 1953 with the rank of Sergeant. During his time of Military Service in the US Army he was united in Holy Matrimony to Azelean Hearon in 1951. Upon completion of his Military Service, Pastor Young and his bride moved to Flint, Michigan where he began working for General Motors Corporation 1954 and retired from Flint Truck & Bus Plant in 1991 after 37 years of employment. In 1956, Pastor Young and family united with the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor J.S. Smith and then under the leadership of Dr. W. G. Terry where he served in the Adult Choir and Deacon Board. In 1974 he was called into the ministry and in 1979 was Ordained & called to Pastor the Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Young served faithfully as Pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church for 31 years. In December 2010 Pastor Young retired as Pastor and with the leading of God found Providence Missionary Baptist Church a Pastor by the name of Rev Edward Burns, Jr. Pastor Young's last words as Pastor were "I am retiring as Pastor but not retiring from preaching and I am not leaving Providence Missionary Baptist Church." Pastor Young served not only at Providence Baptist Church but in addition, served in various capacities in the Great Lakes District Association, and Great Lakes District Congress specifically as Treasurer and 2nd Vice-President respectively. He also served as an instructor in the Great Lakes District Congress. Pastor Young and his faithful companion Sis Young were faithful to the State Convention/Congress and National Functions. Pastor Young also served as treasurer of the Minister Alliance, and served on the board of the CPSA Courier Newspaper. Pastor Emeritus Benjamin F. Young Sr. leaves to cherish his memory: wife of 67 years and five months, Azelean Young; 3 sons, Benjamin F Young Jr (Jeannette) of Round Rock, TX, Aubrey (Peggy) Young of Radcliff, Ky and Keith L (Yvette) Young of Burton, MI; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; god-son, Caphas Roberts; 3 sisters, Ruby Peck of Clow, AR, Ella Mae Steel of San Diego, CA, Britiish Jean (Thomas) Turner of Texarkana, TX; sister-in-law, Ruby (Elder Floyd) Stewart of Ozan, AR, Lula Morrison of Ozan, AR, Cynthia Murphy of Hope, AR, Sherlyn (Don) Carrigan of Ozan, AR and Betty Hearon of Hope, AR; and host of cousins including special cousins, Daisy Williams of Clow, AR and Sherman Perkins of Flint. Pastor Young was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and Isiah Young; siblings, Elder Robert Young, Ruth Evelyn Stewart, James Young, Mae Ola Thompson, and Charles Young. The Family would like to thank Chelsea, Claudia, Melissa, Micki, Dave, Britney, Teri, Sunshine, Nancy, Brenda, Jennifer with the Reverance Home Care and Home Care Hospice, and Doctor James Walter and staff.
