MAHAN, Mr. Ben, Jr. - Age 62, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at his residence. Family hour 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at North Star Missionary Baptist Church, 1657 E. Broadway St., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m., Pastor James O. Flowers, Sr., officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. Mahan will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Tuesday. Deacon Ben Mahan, Jr. was born January 12, 1948 in Sprott, Alabama, the son of Ben Mahan, Sr. and Eunice (Brown) Mahan. Ben, Jr. was a graduate of Mason County Eastern High School in Custer, MI. and an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the United States Army where he bravely served his country in the Vietnam War. In 1984, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Willene Davis and from that marriage were three children; Lamont, Monica and LaTonya. Ben loved his family and took great pride in providing for them. He retired in 2009 after 42 years of service as a Crane Operator at Chevrolet Flint Metal Fabricating, a division of General Motors Corporation and was a member of UAW Local #659. Ben was also a member of the Masonic Temple. Deacon Mahan was a faithful and devoted member of the North Star Missionary Baptist Church, where he also served as Assistant Superintendent. Ben loved the Lord and his faith was strong. He was a joyful, caring person with a kind heart, willing to help anyone. In his spare time he loved to do carpentry work, cook, laugh and enjoy good company with family and friends. Through God’s grace and mercy along with the special care of his wife, family and friends, he continued to be a blessing, uplifting the hearts of everyone around him. Deacon Ben Mahan, Jr. leaves to cherish in precious memory: loving and devoted wife of 26 years, Willene Mahan; son, Lamont (Latasha) Davis, all of Flint, 2 daughters, Monica Davis of Atlanta, GA and Latonya Davis of Memphis, TN; god-son, Wesley Ulmer; 3 grandchildren, Davonte and Javonte Davis, both of Houston, TX and Montiana Davis of Flint; father, Ben (Willie Mae) Mahan, Sr. of Custer, MI; 4 brothers, Walter (Kim) Mahan of Flint, Otis and Carl Mahan, both of Cleveland, OH and Jimmie Mahan of Ann Arbor, MI; 11 sisters, Doris Guy, Kellie Person, Betty (David) Robertson, Nellie Mahan, Claretha Jackson, Jessie Saunders, Fannie Richardson, Dorothy (Elisha) Burnes, Brenda Miller and Priscilla Miller, all of Flint and Floria Keys of Arizona; 3 sisters-in-law, Zera Valentine of Helena, AR, Brendalyn Taylor (Jerome) Kirkland and Lilisa Valentine, both of Flint; 2 brothers-in-law, Jerry Valentine of Flint and Samuel (Carol) Valentine of Memphis, TN, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, Milton, Smitty, Cherokee, Rudy, Chaney, Arthur and the North Star Missionary Baptist Church family. Deacon Mahan, Jr. was preceded in death by his mother, Eunice Mahan; mother-in-law, Dorise Valentine; 2 sisters, Edith Mosley and Susie Brown and brother, Walter Terrell. The family wishes to express their most heartfelt thanks to Pastor and Mrs. James O. Flowers, Sr., and the North Star Missionary Baptist Church family, Dr. Jeffrey Arnold, Dr. Khalil Katato and the Genesys Hospice Nursing Staff, Chester Price of Price Lawn Care Service and Tyson Fields Lawn Service.
