Mrs. Anne B. Pickens

PICKENS, Mrs. Anne B. - age 77, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Mickarl D. Thomas officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, G-5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Friday. Mrs. Pickens will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Annie Beatrice (Shanks) Pickens was born the seventh child to the late Jerry and Lula Mae Shanks of Shubuta, Mississippi. Annie Bea acknowledged Christ at the early age at Center Ridge Baptist Church in Shubuta, MS. She attended Center Ridge and St. John Elementary School in Shubuta later Shirley Owens Vocational High School in Quitman, MS. Annie was the first ever African American woman to work in a Dental Clinic under Dr. Mathis in Quitman, MS. She later relocated to Long Beach, California where she earned an Associates Degree in Home Health Care and continued her education and career as an Independent Contractor caring for challenged individuals. She was united in Holy Matrimony to James Pickens in March of 1955. With this marriage came three beautiful boys; Dwight Lenord, James (Patricia) Flynn both of Flint, and Elester Roshy of Flint. Mrs. Pickens enjoyed cooking, doing hair, and she had a strong passion for her career; caring for others. Mrs. Annie B. Pickens is survived by her three sons; 11 grandchildren, Terrence, Tenisha, James, Breanna, Kendra-Nicole, Alexis, Alex, Adam, Phillip, Ashley and Robert; several great-grandchildren; brother, Jessie of Aberdeen, MD, 5 sisters, Ida Heard of Cincinnati, OH, Mary Bryant and Sara Shanks, both of Chicago, IL, Pearl Bradshaw of Harvey, IL, Lillie Davis of Dolton, IL; 3 sisters-in-law, Eleanor Shanks of Chicago, IL, Liz Williams and Virginia Caroline, both of Tuscaloosa, AL; brother-in -law, John Edwards of Chicago, IL; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends including special friends, Arthur “BO” Travis and Billy Watkins. Mrs. Annie B. Pickens was preceded in death by her parents; Jerry and Lula Mae Shanks; sister, Diane Shanks; 2 brothers, Otis and John Shanks and cousin, Jones Pickens.
