HOOKER, Mr. Alphonso, Jr. - Age 82, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Genesys Health Park. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m., Eld. John Thornton officiating, Bishop Odis A. Floyd, Pastor. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 a.m. Friday. Mr. Hooker will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Alphonso Hooker, Jr. was born May 27, 1928 in Gibson County, Trenton, Tennessee, the son of Alphonso Sr., and Mattie Bell Hooker. Alphonso was a resident of Flint and a member of New Zion Baptist Church for many years, where he sang in the choir. He served in the United States Army from November 6, 1952 – October 25, 1954 with United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Conflict Medal and Bronze Service Star. He retired with 31 years of service from Chevrolet Manufacturing (The Hole) and was a member of UAW Local 659. Alphonso loved games of chance, cooking and family gatherings. He was always a loving and caring person. Alphonso was also very passionate about the Lord and his family. He touched lives and hearts of everyone he met or came in contact with. Mr. Alphonso Hooker, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory: loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Viola Hooker; daughter, Nicole Hooker; step daughter, Sonita Taylor, all of Flint; 8 grandchildren, DeMarrio Hooker, Neondra Thompson, Markell Lawson, Christopher Hooker, Winifred, Westly, Joseph and Brandon Whiteside; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Bobbie Cox of Humboldt, TN, Ann M. Doaks and Mary F. Hooker, both of Trenton, TN; brother, Tommie D. (Faye) Hooker of Dyer, TN; 4 sisters-in-law, Monica, Victoria, Sondra and Debby Taylor, all of Flint; 2 brothers-in-law, Warren Taylor, Jr. of Flint and Louis Taylor, Jr. of Chicago, IL; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, Willie Fields, Alvin Watson, Wadell Fletcher, Henry Burns and Wanda Irvine. Mr. Hooker was preceded in death by his daughter and son; parents; 2 sisters; and 3 brothers. The family would like to express special thanks to the entire staff of Genesys Medical Center, Dr. R. Danish and staff at Genesee Cancer and Blood Disease Treatment Center, Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, Dr. F. Khorfan and staff of Genesee Lung Associates, Dr. J. Jota and staff, Dr. R.
